Something like this would be much preferred.

This is generally referred to as the "1800 layout" based off of the G80-1800.
It has arrows, f-row, and numpad all on a tkl form factor(ish)

When I read the OP, "gaming" seemed to be the operative word. Are people picking up on that, or just clamoring for their own desires?

Clearly it needs to stay small and not get crapped up with lame appurtenances, but I have always wanted a pair of secondary "mouse switches" in a handy spot on my keyboard.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

This already exists. The IBM 4704-200 is almost perfectly hhkb compatible (especially when you mod the capslock key to remove the step).

So many votes for 60%...one of my favorite layouts but this guy is making a gaming board...

60% would not be ideal for gaming.

why would you ever want to game on BS when MX black exists

I'm always down for more Buckling Spring.  Sure it's not a great gaming switch, but I just want to see 6KRO or NKRO BS in an alternate layout.  Right now my only option for a non-full-size BS is a used SSK for $200-250.

IMHO, nope. But it can be made into a better version.

I have read most of the ideas behind the design from here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1472283/the-keyboard-of-my-dreams-that-no-one-will-ever-make-an-mmorpg-keyboard

That particular player's design criteria are very personal. I don't think it represents the majority of gamers by any means. For instance, I prefer the F keys split up so I can locate the ones I want more easily by touch. If they're in a block together I can't quickly hit F5 or F8, etc.

Drop the numpad completely. Unnecessary on a gaming board. Despite what some gaming boards look like, you don't need extra macro keys to the left of the normal keyboard. If you don't have enough keys around the movement keys including Alt combinations, you're using too many keys when playing, IMO.

Keycap sizes. The bottom row needs fixing. You need an Alt on the right side of the spacebar (for Alt Gr functionality for international use). I would say to use 1.25x, 1.25x, 1.25, 1.5x, 2.25x, 2.25x, 1.5x, 1.25x, 1.25x, 1.25x. That gives you Ctrl, Fn, Super, Alt, Space / Backspace, Space / Backspace, Alt, Super, Menu, Ctrl with oversized Alt keys and swappable Space / Backspace thumb keys (the size of right shift).

Use Cherry MX Greens instead of Buckling Spring to make it easier to design and build and allow more aftermarket keycap choices. Not to mention the possibility of offering the same design with different keyswitch options to appeal to more gamers.

That would be a BETTER gaming board, but a QWERTY style staggered rows board will never be great for gaming. The whole design is a compromise.

An HHKB layout Buckling Spring board, however, is a completely different thing. A thing a lot of GeekHack members would pay a lot of money for  :D  (especially if you can make it with a fully programmable layout, particularly the Fn layer).

Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

if you wanna market towards gamers it HAS to be full size or TKL

I've never convinced anyone to buy a 60%, but TKLs and fullsize is ez mode

I'm too much a fan of the traditional ANSI TKL layout :p

Hmmm... y, I guess a standard TKL will sell the best.

But I like the idea of having a more optimised bottom row. Having larger Alt keys and adding a Fn key to the left side allows you to have two spacebars made from right shift keys that can be set to space, backspace or shift for better use of the thumbs. Also puts the left Alt key in a better position to be used when using WASD or ESDF for gaming.

Not sure if that would freak out potential buyers, though. Thing is, there are already plenty of standard layout TKL boards available, something like this with some unique features could help it stand out and be good selling points if the benefits can be promoted well (good marketing).

A TKL (a la SSK) would probably appease the most people and have the best success in sales. Personally, I'd like a 75%-style like CPT said.

A conventional TKL, not like that abomination Unicomp is threatening :p

Capacitive BS with TKL layout :) Oh, and maybe with programmable layer.
