Diving in.
« on: Mon, 08 September 2014, 09:39:26 »
Hello, I'm a 21 year old forestry-engineering student from Finland who's found a new enthusiasm for mechs in the last few months, although I'v owned a first generation Ducky Shine w/ browns for almost 3 years now (I think). I always remember having some enthusiasm for keyboards and their sound as I remember my brother making fun of me when I was astonished by the sound and feel of the my uncle's Model M when I was a kid but never really explored the interest until now. Currently have Ducky Shine w/ Browns and Ducky Shine 3 /w Blues and 2 keycap sets from Ducky.

Longtime lurker of the /r/mechanicalkeyboards subreddit and finally decided to sign up here after a day or two of lurking and temptation.

Currently planning on getting Poker 2 with a nice keycap set and an Alu case, have pretty much decided every part (Is that the correct word?) that I'm going to get for it but still can't decide on some colours! Although I'm afraid that it won't last me long and I'll eventually drop some money into a Topre ;_; Or just go ham on some attics.

Or just go try your uncle model M again?

And if you like it consider that the model F is even better.

If you have the opportunity to try the buckling spring switch, Topre, alps before continuing with cherry it *could* save you some money on the long. I do not imply that cherry is not good, just that since there's other options and that choosing our favorite switch is a very personal preference thing then the sooner you try them all the sooner you have an idea of what you prefer. And there's no shame liking more than one.

For me I started with cherry then discovered the model F and now only use the model F, but I still like my Filco with browns, it's just that I prefer the feel of the buckling spring. But that's a personal preference so you can buy a poker and like it a lot, but before doing so if you have the opportunity to try at least some other switches it would be good to give you an idea of what you prefer.

How customizable are older boards? I love customizing stuff (Which is why I'm going for a Poker) and I'm not sure how easy that would be.

Gotta start carrying a charger to classes.

For sure the customization is way reduced with a model M/F. Keycaps will be limited even if unicomp can make some nice ones for a nice price, but still it's nothing compared to all the group buys for MX stuff.

As for the keyboard itself, you will have a harder time finding a specific layout but at the same time if you are ready to try to mod it with a lot of elbow grease then you can make some very nice layouts out of the different base layouts you will find.

BUT, using a Soarer converter (for example) you will be able to remap all keys and configure layers so it takes a normal layout and increase the possibilities by A LOT. And there has been some awesome works recently to make some completely new controllers for the Model F and the likes and I know someone also made a custom model F pcb, so there is light for full custom mode F in the future even if not for now.

In the end it all depends on what you prefer in a keyboard. But trying the different switches is a nice experience in itself. I have myself to try many many switches I didn't have the opportunity to try yet (topre and many different cherry and alps switches and hall effect and beamspring etc.)

So if you are set on the poker, don't hesitate and if you have the opportunity to try new switches do so since it's fun in itself. Just hard for the budget if you fall in love with another switch after acquiring many keyboards with a specific switch.

Welcome to Geekhack!

It sounds like you already know what you are getting yourself in for :))

Some of it's pretty unbelievable - but if you set yourself some simple goals to begin with, it's amazing how much money you can spend :p
