How good are the LEDs that come with Ducky boards?
« on: Mon, 22 September 2014, 23:32:45 »
I was greatly considering to buy the Ducky Mini but I recently read this thread on /r/mechanicalkeyboards about people chiming in on Ducky's LEDs. I read stories about how some people have had some of their LEDs die on them after 6 months.

I wanna at least have my LEDs bright and fresh for at least a year ya know

I just had an LED die on my Ducky Shine 3 after using it for less than a month, and now I have to spend $20 to ship it back for a replacement  :'(
I think that the LED problems have been isolated to the Ducky Shine 3s, but who knows if they extend to the Ducky Mini as well.

Some people do, but we don't always hear back as to why (e.g. faulty LEDs, faulty controller etc.).

I have three Ducky Shines, two of them are nearly 2 years old, and both are still going strong.  One has had heavy daily use for most of that time with LEDs on, and all are still bright.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I just got my Shine 3 yesterday and the LED's are vibrant and nice (I got white LED's). The RGB lights on either side of the spacebar is also nice. I have it set to demo mode so it cycles through all of the colors since all of them look good with white.

Ducky LEDs are really really bright, and very good colour quality. Massively more so than the Corsair RGB. But my friends with a Ducky 2 also has had an LED die on his Q. But no total collapse of the LED quality/functionality to speak of.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?
