Layout Question - Transition - US or something to my Layout
« on: Tue, 30 September 2014, 10:12:36 »
Hello,
What do I need to do in order to use a say a Norway layout keyboard with my layout preference ISO German.

1. Keycaps.. (that is rather easy compared to point 2)
2. reprogram /  flashing? ... is there a software that reprograms all the special keys to something else reliably?

Thanks
Tour de kübord - Germany Layout:
Original IBM model M (too loud) -> rubber dome IBM Rapid Access II (mediocre) -> Cherry STREAM XT scissor switch (somewhat OK) -> G80 with clear (too hard for me) -> Zowie Celeritas with brown (good but dirty)-> Filco Majestouch 2 Brown (great) -> CM NovaTouch + Filco Doubleshots (best)

You just change the layout setting in Windows... I can't believe the amount of people who don't get this...

If your default keyboard layout in Windows is already set to German, just plug it in and type. The keyboard sends scancodes for the physical key pressed and Windows interprets it according to the selected keyboard layout. If the "incorrect" legends on the keycaps bothers you then you can try to find a keycap set with German ISO layout and replace them (there are quite a few Cherry G80 and G81 keyboards that come in German ISO layout).
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

I see that according to your signature you have a German layout G80 with Clears. You could replace the springs with 62g ones (turn them into ErgoClears) and add a support plate to stiffen up the PCB. That improves the board a LOT. I also have a G80 with Clears, but found the stock board to be REALLY flexible.

ErgoClears have much more tactility than Browns and feel nicer to type on, IMHO. Also great for gaming. My favourite MX switch type.

thank you for your tip - I am not sure if I do this. Or even can. The clear keyboard I gave to a friend. In addition when I recently tried to open one single pinging Mx switch without molding, I did not have the tools, and in the end I did not manage it to open them. The switch has now some scars and hacks but nothing else.  :-[ however I like the idea of stiffing up the PCB - not so much beause of this board which my friend now has but because of pinging and swinging sounds some keyboards make... I wonder why I havent seen a mat that supresses ... maybe because I havent search for it yet :)
