We should make it food related.

People can post the type of cuisine they cook normally (or drink related) and their SS sends them accessories or something for their cooking.

That sounds terrible.

Mostly because I can't cook :(

I was really bad at my description on what I liked last year, so I hope I can be more helpful this year to my Santa.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I would love secret santa! It's so fun to gift and see other peoples  reactions. I love this community and would love for someone to organize something. I've had bad experiences with reddit secret santa in the past, spending hours and hours and a good amount of money to create gifts people love, only to find that my secret santa didn't get me anything two years in a row :( but this community is awesome! can't wait to see what people come up with

I think for this one, a DIY theme would be fun.  The giftee would still completely fill in the kinds of hobbies and stuff they are into, but rather than the gifter just buying a pre-made gift, they would gift the stuff needing to make the gift.

Examples:
Model kits, mold making stuff, wood working tools/supplies, electronics kits (arduino?).

Another option would be to find the most random gift you can on Banggood or Aliexpress - not from the adult section (priced as close to $20 as you can).  It would be good if the item was still somewhat related to the giftee.

Both of these ideas are legit.  I like the random gift one a lot, lol.  I can see some silliness ensuing.

I'm not a fan of the random gift only because it's a good way to get something that immediately ends up in the trash.  I think most people would go with weird random instead of something their giftee would use and like but is completely weird random.  There was some of the former with the summer Santa.

I think DIY gifts are fine, but only if that's something people are into. I for one have never soldered, and when I used to build models, I've had one in my cupboard for about two years I haven't put together yet.

I'm not a fan.

That is the main downfall of that idea.  I guess ultimately, it should probably just be a regular gift exchange with maybe just a Christmas theme or something.

Then the theme should be "estalk till you find something interesting". I could get behind that. Even if it does sound a little creeeeepy.

I think the e-stalk should workpretty good as everyone who wants to participate needs a lot of forum posts and those can be used to know what they like or dislike and what item or so they want to have.

DIY theme would be fun. I've also really enjoyed chatting with people on geekhack. Kinda like how I mentioned that Sent and I never talk about keyboards. Might be fun to do an "anything but keyboards" theme where you try and figure out what else the user likes.

That could be fun.  I'm just worried about people half-assing it and/or giving something that would end up in the trash.  There was some awesome handmade stuff this last go around, but some of it was also...interesting.

Maybe make it so that part of the gift is handmade?

That was what I did this last time as well (with a tiny bit of keyboard stuff included - since this is geekhack related and all).  It was a ton of fun and allowed me to look in places I wouldn't normally.
