This whole tournament had a weak field. Zest was the strongest player, but played a very sloppy first series, which he certainly deserved to lose. herO was probably the next best, but got cheesed out by Classic. I found most of the games pretty uninspiring.

All the top players get screwed by being in the GSL, while the players who fled to the other regions (MMA, Taeja, Hyun, Bomber, jjakji, MC) get free admission, it’s a pretty broken system.

If they were all competing on an even playing field, you’d end up with a yearly finals that was at least 13/16 GSL players.

Pretty awesomely hilarious that Life – the guy who couldn’t make it out of Code A in the last GSL – wins this tourney though.

He’s at least in the top 20 in the world, unlike most of the guys in this tournament.

why on earth do people want gsl seasons and then gsl blizzcon finals? and then say "jaedong vs flash pls"?

people have to wait pretty much ALL YEAR in order to get nak and euk vs gsl player matchups. you get gsl vs gsl matchups all year.

are people that are complaining the ones that don't have gsl and proleague subs? (actually isn't proleague free?)

guess you're not a t v z fan?  cause those games were terrific all around.  pvp just sucks in general.

EDIT:

i just noticed you put taeja in that list which is even more confusing.  you said he got a free pass, yet he beat the GSL champ.  that logically doesn't work; if we did have unbalanced points, taeja SHOULD have still gotten in anyways,

You’re projecting a lot here. I didn’t say I wanted a GSL blizzcon finals. I only said it was a weak field, and that the qualification system is broken. Also, Jaedong has never been all that strong as an SC2 player.

The way the system worked in 2014 was basically:
(1) pick a handful (ended up being 6) from among the top 30–40 Korean players (i.e. the ones playing in GSL), based on who pulled enough wins to squeak into the rankings; since the competition is so stiff, this has a strong element of chance in it: a couple bad games and you’re dead.
(2) add in some of the Korean players who used to be best circa 2011–2012, who weren’t sure they could hack it in the new stiffer Korean competition and so fled where they’d be able to earn more prize money (which is, let’s be clear, entirely the correct decision for those guys to make, given the system).

Notice that there aren’t any Europeans or Americans involved in the above.

He did get a free pass. The last time he was in the GSL, he dropped in the round of 16 group stage (the time before that he dropped in the round of 32 group stage), and then fled to a weaker region where he’s faced relatively much weaker competition ever since.

Getting a free pass doesn’t mean he isn’t a fine player, or that he can never take series off better players. Heck, it’s entirely possible he would have been able to qualify even on an even playing field.

In other words, “he got a free pass” ≠ “wow that guy sucks”.

That's why the changes for next WCS will be a bit better overall.

I didn't mean to imply life was bad. He's great, MMA just has a special place in my heart. I didn't expect him to make it to the finals, and when he got there I just wanted him to win it all.
