Something I've noticed
« on: Sat, 15 November 2014, 16:10:53 »
Not sure if this is common knowledge or not... but when comparing different Thick PBT keycaps I noticed something really neat about the Vortex set I purchased recently. It appears that in their molds they have included an indentation on the inner lip of the cap to avoid rubbing with costar stabilizers.

These Vortex caps are actually 1.5mm, the same thickness as a similar set that I purchased from Leopold. However, the Leopold keycaps do not have an indentation and rub on the costar wire while these Vortex ones do not!

Just thought I'd share my observations with the rest of you. I now have a whole new appreciation for Vortex.

Judging by the regular marks, and the concave appearance, I wonder if they carved that bit out after the keycaps were made?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

A bit off-topic, but how do your Vortex PBT caps feel compared to the Leopold ones. I have some Vortex ones and am considering getting the Leopold ones because they are so cheap on Ebay. The Vortex ones are the only PBT caps I have so I'm not sure how they stack up against other PBT caps.

I really like the Leopold keycaps... they are definitely solid... but I would not recommend them if you plan on using them with costar stabilizers. You'll find yourself taking a dremel to it to sand down the lip...

The set I got was part of the original drop on Massdrop. It was supposed to be OEM but the community determined it was Cherry. After getting my set, I actually liked the cherry profile better anyways. I would imagine the OEM set is made with the same inner lip as the cherry... but obviously I cannot confirm that. AFAIK the only differences between cherry and OEM is the height of each keycap.
