Need some advice for choosing a keyboard
« Reply #50 on: Fri, 24 July 2009, 11:47:06 »
I think the brown Cherry switches are best for me.
I do more typing now (at work mostly...) than gaming.
So the G80-3000 comes with the Browns?
This is what it says on DATACAL:
"3 different key actions: Linear action, soft contact, and keyclick "
What does this mean 3 switch types ?
At "TOTALBARCODE.com" they have G80-3000 for about 45$ less, can this be?

That's just a copy'n'pasted description probably from Cherry.  The G80 is in principle available with either of the three different switch types.  But on the Datacal page they very clearly state that they sell the version with brown MX switches only!  And that would be the one called "soft contact".
BS: Customizer, Model Ms; Alps: CSK-2101, FK-2002, AT-101 (SGI & Dell), MCK-860, FKBN87Z/EB; Cherry: Poker X, FKBN87MC/EB, WY60, G80-3000, G84-4100, TDV 5010

What if you're not Italian? Or even a Stallion - nooooo.... I won't continue this thought...

Just talk like Mario.  You'll fool everyone.  Princess Peach can validate Mario's stallion status if need be.

Datacal carries the brown version of the G80.  The one you are looking for is the "Soft Contact."  Datacal's 'boards are more expensive, because they are custom made for Datacal.  The cheaper G80's you will see are all Cherry blue and have both English and Chinese characters.  These are regular stock items for Cherry.  The Datacal 'boards only have English characters.

You want this: http://www.datacal.com/cherry-g80-3000-kybd.htm.  That is, if you want the Cherry browns.  Call Datacal to place your order, and they will give you an "education" (the ItlnStln discount) of 10% (it makes the 'board $99, if the math is too difficult).  You can buy the Filco for a little more, but it is louder.  I just split the difference and bought both, but now i have a hard time figuring out which one I like better.

Take a look at the wiki entry Mechanical Keyboards Sorted By Switch - in the discussion this whole Cherry coding system is spelled out. Datacal's model number is screwed up.

My sig has the correct model number for this 'board if you want a reference.

Stallions don't have to do math. Their duties are....elsewhere.

This one does math: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyikP_ewdJM

Just talked to Cathlyn from DataCal.
Very nice lady she is...Also she knows this forum. Guess she mumbled to herself... "wow another geek druiling over the G80-3000... "
What this thing with the 10% ? Is this a joky joky, or is it for real..?

Please no difficult calculations like ItlnStln is giving me . ;-)

P.S.
Oh, Cathlyn said that the keybaord is indeed **clicky**... so what is it? Clicky or not clicky???

The 10% was an "education" discount.  Cathlyn wasn't the lady I dealt with, I went through Loree Rolnik.

You'll find that the "uninitiated" will pretty much refer to any mechanical keyboard as "clicky."  The one they are selling, though, is the Cherry brown version, so you will be getting the right one.
