Do you like full layout keyboards?
« on: Tue, 09 December 2014, 18:41:07 »
Here is one I jsut made for myself.
Made of lubed tactile clear switches with 57g custom springs.

The engravings on the bottom was for a client.
However, there was a mistake in the PCB dimension in one hole that I was going to use for a bolt-thru hole, so I kept this housing for months.
But after I decided to use this for myself, I drilled a hole on that PCB and made this thing.

After making many kinds of keyboards on orders,
I came to like all kinds of switches though I mainly like spring presures between 45g to 60g.
And I like most layouts, too.

That's nicely done - the lighting reflecting off the plate is a nice touch :)

Although I have found that I prefer TKL keyboards.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've used full layout all my life. I've been using a TKL and 60% for about 9 months or so and will probably never go back.

I like TLK, too, but I prefer 70% layout the most.

I was the same and I thought I would never go back.
Full layout is not my main layout but sometimes I want to type it. :)

Do you know about the multi-quote function? You can quote a few posts into yours, instead of one quote/post at time.

I see it. I just didn't have the need so far. :)
Sorry if I messed up by quoting one by one.

I like full sized keyboards, even though I know that makes me kind of an oddity here. Maybe it's just because I have really broad shoulders, but I never really prefer having my mouse closer to my typing area. Even when I use a 60% or TKL board and try to put them close together, I'll naturally move my mouse over farther and farther right, until they're shoulder width or farther. I also use the numbpad quite a bit for my homework, as I'm a physics and math double major. I also do a lot of gaming, and when I game I defiantely find it more comfortable to keep my arms spread farther apart for that.

My ideal keyboard form factor would probably be the same as a model m13, with fn shortcuts like the HHKB. I always miss that arrow diamond on the m13, I swear I'd almost move my wrists if I had it. But yeah, a set up like that seems like the best of both worlds.

A Cherry MX keyboard with that arrow diamond would be great. :)

I prefer TKL because you can use a USB keypad with them and have the option of repositioning it or removing it if needed.  I can't go without arrow keys because too much software uses them.  Full size is still fine though.  I'm wide so I don't have any space issues.

I have no use for a numpad, and I have limited desk space so a TKL or a 60% is perfect for me.

I prefer full-size due to the occasional use i have for the numberpad (it really is helpful for g-mod) and an excuse to fill more desk-space with pretty leds. Question: what parts did you use(pcb, case, etc.)?
Keyboards:  Final Fantasy XI XIth Anniversary keyboard (topre 45g) | Realforce Rgb (topre 45g, Eva Noctilucous keyset) | Mionix Zibal 60 (mx black, Vortex doubleshot) | Greymark (white alps) | IBM model M (found in the trash!)

When I'm not in need of desk space, I prefer the full size. The extra distance to the mouse is negligible to me.

But when I am working with documents or a few books, the smaller the board the better!

My desk is pretty wide so I have no issues using a full layout. :)

I used Monster Mask's A87-EX PCB and I designed the aluminum housing and assembled myself. That is what I do. :)

The controller used on the PCB is called ps2avrU modified and developped by Monster Mask and it uses a Atmega32au chip. :)

But when I am working with documents or a few books, the smaller the board the better!

I can use a full layout in my office because I don't do anything without my keyboard and mouse,
but in my workplace at home, I mainly use 60% or 70% keyboard because I do many things such as making keyboards rather than typing a keyboard. :)

The controller used on the PCB is called ps2avrU modified and developped by Monster Mask and it uses a Atmega32au chip. :)

Ah, so no dedicated USB then. I was wondering, since  ATmega32U4 and the like don't seem to provide the capability to switch between USB and PS/2 protocol on the same set of pins.

Thank you!

I don't know much about that field. I only do soldering and assembling and I design the housing.
As far as I know, if you plug a USB cable into the connector and connect the cable to a USB socket in your computer, it works as a USB keyboard.
If you put a PS/2 gender at the end of the cable and connect it to the PS/2 socket of your computer, then it works as a PS/2 keyboard.
The board supports both interfaces.
