What's the difference between the different Lexmark Model Ms?
« on: Mon, 03 August 2009, 16:05:20 »
Whilst reading through clicky keyboards, I found that Lexmark produced no less than five different US layout Model Ms on a regular basis for most of their time in the business. They are -

42H1292
52G9658
52G7000
82G2383
92G7453

Now, the first three seem straightforward -

The 42H1292 seems to have been a simplified 1391401. They got rid of the detachable cable, the two piece keycaps and the case was made of a lighter plastic, and had a cleaned up case - the speaker grille and three holes on the case were removed.

The 52G9658 appears to be a 1391401 without the detachable cable. It appears to have the same case as the 1391401 - it has the holes and the grille, and from anecdotal evidence on Ripster's blue vs black label thread, the plastic seems to be of the same grade.

The 52G7000 appears to be the above without the two piece caps.

Now, the fun comes with the last two. The 82G appears to be completely identical to the 52G9658, I can't find any difference between the two anywhere I look, yet the two were produced at the same time and there seems to be plenty of both made.

The 92G is an even more unusual beast. Some appear to be like the 52G6958. Some appear to be like the 42H1292 with two piece caps. I even spotted one on Clickykeyboards that had a detachable cable, making it basically a 1391401.

Anyone with any of the above keyboards have anything to add? In particular, would appreciate if there was any info on the 82G or the 92G.

Well, from looking at the respective archive pages on Clickykeyboards, it seems that the '9658 was two-piece only, and the '9700 was single only. So I'm going to assume that this explains the differing model number.

The part numbers for IBM stuff was horribly inconsistent, they seemed to just pull model numbers out of the air for some of their keyboards. It is conceivable that something like the 82G was the 52G except sold with a different computer model or target market or something like that. As I said, confusing.
