Questions about MX clear
« on: Sat, 27 December 2014, 08:00:28 »
I'm considering getting a board with ergo clears.  There is something I don't understand however.  It is always said that 62g is the minimum for slider recovery with clears, (lubing even recommended to be safe).  However I saw that GON said in a thread that 55g was the minimum.  I tried the 55g and there doesn't seem to be any problem with slider recovery at all.  So what's the deal?  Is 55g not 100% safe?

Also another thing.  I'm getting the MX-Mini from GON for Starcraft play.  I've been a brown guy for a long time but trying the 55g clears is making me reconsider.  The bump just so much more satisfying.  I'm pretty sure it would be much better on a board for typing.  I'm unsure if it would be good for rts gaming like Starcraft however because double clicking is very important.  Double clicking is easy on the clears, but I however somehow feel that pushing the switch takes more "work" than browns, if that makes sense?  So I feel that browns would maybe be better? Please help me decide!

It depends on how worn the housing and clear stem are. Brand new clears can sometimes be scratchy enough that they will hang using lighter springs.
62g seems to simply be the magic number where most unlubed clears will reset without hanging or feeling sluggish while maximizing tactility.

If you aren't going to lube, I wouldn't go any lighter than 60g. If you are going to lube you should be able to use just about anything from 45g+. Make sure you use a high-grade lubricant like Krytox.

Yes I will lube them.  I should clarify, the reason I'm asking is mainly because 62g is too heavy for me, 55g makes the clear a viable switch for me.

I was researching this further and found this: http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/mechanical_switches.php

For some reason clears has the highest rating for gaming switches!

GoN doesn't use anything lighter than 55g springs in his modded clears. My mobik is entirely clears 55g springs and there's no hanging whatsoever (though I doubt he'd ship a board that had keys hanging xD)
