I have never taken an M2-style IBM apart.

Is there anything along the line of a bolt-mod that can be done to these?

No.  M2 style are a pita.  plastic tabs hold everything in place.  Sucks to take apart and put back together.  It is all plastic. Under the barrel plate is just the rubber sheet followed by the matrix and bottom half of the keyboard.  No experience on the m15 but if it is the same as the m2 should be the same.  Sounds like a broken trace on matrix. or a loose connection to the controller.  Both should be easy fixes.
