World's Cutest Keyboard ~(˘▾˘~)
« on: Sun, 08 February 2015, 00:44:09 »
Adorable mini keyboard spotted in a hospital recently, attached to some fancy kind of fancy machine.  I wanted to press and squeeze this little guy with my too-big hands.

That looks right.  I did take a peek at the manufacturer but neglected to write it down.

I have one of these, that may be slightly bigger than this one.

Not great to type on, but we use it in the living room, plugged into the Wii for when we need it.

"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

For the most part, they were underpowered and kinda sucked.

not with an appropriate OS installed...

throw Lubuntu on one, and you'll have one damn fine, and ultra-portable machine

just don't expect it to play games or stream 1080p video...

To me it seemed like at one time everyone had a netbook.
It took only a couple of years until the market was eaten up by smartphones and tablets on one side and ultrabooks on the other - both of them catering to different use cases, and all of them capable of games and 1080p video while being smaller.

Underpowered and sucky, and while yes, put a minimal Linux build on it, the people they mostly appealed to were people like my mom who can't even figure out how to get her computer connected to the internet without my help, much less install and learn a new operating system.

And for a lot of people the point of a portable device IS media and gaming to keep them entertained, which netbooks as you've stated can't pull off. Nor are they suited to actual work, due to the ludicrously small size of their keyboard. My mother had a netbook and I hated it, and for that matter she does too.

They were quite rightly replaced by superior devices that lacked their flaws. Ultrabooks have taken over the small light form factor thing, but with far better specs for doing actual work. Still aren't great generally for gaming but IMO laptops never have been, not even gaming laptops. Smartphones and tablets fill in the casual computing/streaming/etc market and are accessible to the same group of people who went for netbooks because of their somewhat cheaper price.

It does sort of still exist in the form of things like the Chromebook, but it was an awkward device that was around at an awkward time and didn't do a very good job most of the time.

That's a sweet little board!

Unfortunately, the key spacing means it won't be easy to type on (15mm!), but for places you only occasionally need to input text I can see it being very handy.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Then consider yourself out of the group of "most people" :P

Most people who need the functionality of a netbook will be satisfied with what their phones can do. Fitting in a person's pocket more than makes up for the fact that a phone is more cumbersome to use and less satisfying to type on. Netbooks sit in this strange place between to big to be conveniently carried at all times and not powerful to replace a real laptop or desktop. They never caught on because, for *most* people, there was better technology for portability and better technology for real computing.
