In the process of installing Matias/Open Steno 35cn Linears on an eBay AEKII.  I put some caps on to get an initial feel for the switches and they are very smooth indeed.

I just bought a mx black and i think i'm a linear guy for now. Haven't really tried the tactile keys yet.

Anyway, I'm thinking of swapping the springs to 62g to make it lighter initially but now that I've used it for a few weeks, I found that I am not bothered by the weight anyway as I'm not bottoming out at all. Also, is there any way to make it more smooth? or is the only way i have is to change the stems to vintage/gateron linears like what other linear lovers here mentioned?

Still rocking those Reds & Blacks in my Octagon.  Don't really see why anyone would dislike linear switches.  They're at least as good as my browns/clears.

I only have blues right now but after trying out a friend's reds, I'm in love and have to have a board of my own. I'm searching for a QFR with reds right now, and once I find it, I'll finally be a member of the sweet smooth clacks of linears.

Reporting in, so far tried:
-mx red (too light don't like)
-stock black (slightly too heavy and scratchy)
-broken in black(smoother still slightly too heavy)
- gateron clear  (way too light, unusable)
- gateron blacks (almost perfect stock)

Got gaterons clears on the way with 62,65,68 springs, I'm searching for my sweet point, I think 68 or 65 will be the perfect switch for me.

Checking in. I like MX Blacks.
Just curious, are there any TKL keyboards out there that come preloaded with Gateron Blacks?

No keyboards has been found with stock gaterons yet.

I actually heard Noppoo Lolita 87 has stock Gateron switches.

Though I'm having trouble finding a reliable source that sell it in blue backlit and black switches.  :(

Do you guys ever produce double spaces without wanting to? with light linears

I'm pretty sure I'm occasionally tapping the spacebar twice, yet I also started suspecting switch issues, 99% I'm tapping it twice since it's so soft

I'm correcting double spaces 4-5 times a day, yet the issue is far less annoying than other issues, so linears I use, and enjoy

I don't want to open up my keyboard again, yet upgrading the spacebar switch to a black switch might be a good idea, I'm always amazed how red's can even lift the spacebar

It's 99% typing technique.

I had this issue with my Choc Mini, which was actually infamous for doubletapping problems, but it turned out I only had to readjust the way I pressed keys from a bit spiderish style to tapping keys like on a typewriter.

I know there are other people, whose typing style breaks keyboards.

How do they compare to each other in terms of spring pings?

The reason I use red's is because the high coiled spring doesn't ping, otherwise it's way too soft for me

Another linear lover here! Let's expand the minority. :))

After several weeks of heaving using(about 10 hours per day) on the 4 common cherry MXs, I think maybe I love black most, then red. Say byebye to Brown/Blue!

The 4 MXs' competition from my experience:
(The match between brown and blue is insignificant for me and I'll show you why after a short while.)

1.typing.
Recently, I did 200 typing tests(50 for each MX) and keep all the records, e.g., wpm, valid keystrokes per minute, invalid keystrokes(typo+correction) per minute, and so on. Here is the result from some basic statistic analysis:
      Average typing speed: black(170.1wpm) > red(166.7wpm) > brown/blue(less than 155.2wpm, don't care).
      peak speed: black ¡Ö red(197wpm) > brown/blue.
      trough speed:black(155wpm) > red(151wpm) > brown/blue.
So, I type fastest on black. Typing on black is also the most stably.

2.hand feel or typing feel.
   My preference:  black ¡Ö red >> brown/blue.
I get the richest touch feedback on black. The powerful bounce to my fingertip just make me feel substantial and satisfied. Typing on black is somewhat like dancing on the piano. I bottom out the least on black. Mostly, I press down a key before the last pressed key fully floats up. It gives me the most fluent and continuous typing experience.  :thumb:
On red, the general feeling is like on black, but weaker. It seems a lack of something, and my mind feels a bit vacant. Anyhow, it's another kind of experience. Red feels lighter, relaxed, flexible, while it still bouncy and has nearly the same efficiency as black. I bottom out some more than on black. Not sure whether I really like black more than red. Both are very charming.  :-*
Typing on brown is sandy and wobbly. Not very enjoyable for me. The subtle tactility makes me feel laggy while typing or gaming. IMO, the tactility on brown/blue can help many of us keep typing pace, but not for me, it disturbs my pace quite often.
Blue, another charming mx. In fact, I really like blue, just as how I like black and red, maybe not that much. I say no to it just for its noise, which makes me killed by my gf several times.

3.fatigue.
So far, I don't feel any fatigue from those 4 MXs. I psychologically believe red is the easiest to type and the most efficient in the long run, not sure whether it's true or not.

4.typo.
I does feel I get a bit more typo on red/brown than on black/blue. But lukily, it turns out that they are almost the same based on the statistic analysis, so I will try to not worry about it from now on.

5.gaming.
I prefer to choose the most comfort and reactive to play, in my case, black/red.
A few words, I never casually press some keys down while I rest my fingers on mx red. For double-tapping, black seems a little bit faster than red, not quite sure, but they're definitely faster than brown and blue, imo. For accuracy, no difference, as I said before.

I've sold all my brown/blue by yesterday. For black and red, I don't know which is my favourite.

I only know I love Linear switch. ;)

I believe that all Cherry MX switches do have ping. The ping will be obvious on some than the other, it will reduce when the switches get older or are being lubed (e.g high viscosity oil like Victorinox) So the stock, brand new, unlubed Cherry MX switches will have more ping than the older ones. In my case, I lubed them all so I did not notice the ping but perhaps it is because I did not try to listen to the ping?

If your room ever gets dead silent, you would hear the ping even if you aren't listening to it, the reason I don't like ping mod's is because I'm afraid they will wear over time -or- I will miss 1-2 switches that will bother me equally, which happens (and happened)

Also, I had a chance to observe my double space issues, it's 99% because I rest my fingers on switches, probably causing the space to stay in between the activation area and re-press easily, during typing I  do rest my thumb on the space key, without wanting to

A nice solution for me is to replace the space's red with a modded black switch, but I don't like the idea to replace all modifiers with black switches, especially if you're touch typing, it might confuse you on a lower level, but since the space key always experiences the thumb-power, I don't think it will be an issue, the only issue is to reach the innards of the keyboard after all that anti-ping stuffing mods :)

Overall I find red's to be soothing, they also produce just the right amount of plastic-to-plastic sound from sliding to give that mechanical keyboard feeling, but the only reason I prefer them over black's is because of their silent springs

Perhaps the reason helping Cherry MX Red less ping is because the spring has high number of coils and the bottom out force is low. It leads to the fact that when I'm typing on Cherry MX Red, I have a feeling that it is too light and it travels is quite slow comparing to Black. So I prefer Black and its similar springs. I feel they are just right for me.

I just replaced the spacebar switch with a black one on my red-switched board and with a clear one on my green switched board (clear because spacebar enhances the click imperfections or perfections too much)

I'm not 100% sure about the green-switch mod, it feels good/relaxing, yet I would strongly suggest replacing the red spacebar switch with a black one on red boards, I'm really really enjoying it, It eliminated the double spacebar issue I was experiencing

Both of my thumbs are on the spacebar, I also rest my fingers slightly, when the right thumb presses the spacebar, sometimes the left one re-actives the red-switch while resting, not likely with the black one, it also doesn't bother as thumbs are stronger

Time to relax a bit with linear switches

(I also googled Victorinox lube and read some Amazon reviews, I have to say I'm slightly traumatised)

I'm strongly considering going into keycap manufacturing, cherry mx's seem sub-optimal in many aspects, yet I can't leave the beauty of keycaps behind and try other switches

If there was a manufacturer like GMK/SP/KB* that at least sold basic keycaps (more SP-like), it would be pretty fun to try/use other switch models

I'm also going to try alps/matias switches one of these days, but I'm holding back
