What Do You Listen To?
« on: Sun, 06 September 2009, 23:21:21 »
Just curious if you listen to music while online. Internet radio? Personal collections? I usually listen to internet streams- I found two that I like and alternate depending on what's playing... Afternoon Naphttp://www.downtempo.org/
 or Sleepbot Environmental Broadcast http://www.sleepbot.com/ambience/broadcast/
Any recommendations?

Thanks o2dazone...  I have GrooveSalad in my bookmarks but don't go there much anymore. I see di.fm has an ambient channel and it sounds great so far.

I used to just pick through my big music collection every once in a while, but now I've grown very fond on internet radio, strangely I'm really liking Pandora lately.  I just turn it on and let it run, pick a song and let it pick what to play next.  Except of course for my occasional excursion into an Incubus binge.
They are inevitable.

I'm liking GooveSalad so far though.

I used to listen to some online techno radios a few years ago, wonder if there is anything still good around.

I usually listen to my personal collection, but I do listen to a lot of Sirius/XM when I am on the road (Chill, usually).  Although, I have been indulging in quite a bit of Pandora now that I have a Palm Pre.  Both Sirius and Pandora help augment the personal collection by exposing me to new music.

Good call! (Vocal Trance for me)

I also like Early 90's cheese...

And am a total and utter fan of the Prodigy... Tattoo to prove it and all.

Will also, depending on mood, play Enya, Marilyn Manson, Korn, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Gabber, Rock...

Well, just about anything except Pop (Ugh), Country and Jazz (Talented as hell, but is it so much to ask that they play in time?)

???

Seems to me that most of the good jazz musicians I have seen/listened to have some of the best senses of time and rhythm of anybody I've ever run across, musician or no!

(Guess what I like to listen to? ;) )

It sorta varies. I listen to my personal collection a lot of the time, which is a mix of a lot of genres, at the moment it's mostly of the neue deutsche härte genre, though, so megaherz and eisbrecher and so on. Other times I listen to music in spotify, or web radios playing EBM or Trance or whatever I'm in the mood to listen to.

I like to listen to jazz, hip-hop, downtempo electronic (because it contains elements of jazz and hip-hop), and classical. I was a hip-hop radio DJ in college for KVRX in Austin when they were still around (they're an NPR affiliate these days).

It just seems like when I do watch/listen to some, some members always seem to be playing a different song, albeit at the same tempo. I suppose that would have been a better phrase. It just doesn't sit well with me. One of the few, but I guess there has to be something.

Have you ever learned any Jazz theory?
What I've noticed is that with jazz it isn't just about listening, but knowing what you're listening to.  There is a lot of stuff that isn't necessarily just pleasing to the ears, but is often a joke in a way(quote a phrase from someone on a song form years ago or something like that) and the thing is people who don't know exactly what it is that they're quoting don't get it and then just kinda get confused in a way.  Also, there are certain styles of playing that don't adhere to the normal 'rules' of music and therefore don't sound good unless you know about that specific style.

I guess my best analogy would be like an inside joke.  If you're on the outside, you just think they're being stupid.

BTW I totally understand what you mean, before I took a bunch of jazz classes in high school, I thought they were all just crazy =)
It's really just an acquired taste.

A TV tuner card is another alternative.  Older ones had radio support sometimes, but still new ones are a viable background-noise source.  (has 4" window of That 70's Show playing)

Oh, I understand it to a point, I just don't "dig" it. I suppose it's the way I'm wired. Thankfully, with a fairly far-ranging taste in music, I have plenty to fall back on.

I have been thinking about this ever since this thread started. I have to say I don't really have a particular genre of music that I like better than the others. I pretty much like them all. From classical to heavy metal I like pretty much all of it.

Gotcha!  Everybody's got their tastes.

I just see a lot of people who rag on jazz because they don't know anything about music so obviously they don't understand it.

Just a thought while we are on the subject of Music, what Media Player do you use?

I use, and have for about 10 years, Winamp or in Linux, Audacious. Plugins for everything (Now playing being my favourite), and my beloved Nucleo Alien Mind skin.

I can highly recommend moc if you're looking  for a stable text mode player for browsing carefully sorted folders (in contrast to tag-based categorization).  Supports many formats, has a very short gap between tracks and spawns a background daemon later invocations of mocp re-attach to.  Very nice.  I used mp3blaster before but it had too many bugs.

I'm interested in the Folder Based rather than Tags (When I rip my music, it's Artist, Album, give up. It is also stored that way... For Example:-"/mnt/SDB1/Media/MP3/artist/album/" ), as a lot of my MP3's don't have tags.

hmmm.... maybe something that can replace Winamp or Audacious (Which replaced XMMS)? Many have tried, and so far failed!

Music is background for me. I care not a jot what it looks like, as long as I can cue up a playlist if I choose to get "fancy" (I usually dump a folder onto a player, and switch focus back to what I was doing).

My music player of choice is the exception to a lot of my personal rules and preference for software... iTunes...

Rhythmbox is an acceptable substitute for Linux though. Heard lots of good things about Amarok, but it's user interface single handedly represents all that is wrong with Linux =P

I can see that, but to play music in the background, it annoys me that they are GUI. "I'm not looking at it. I'm listening to it... stop consuming my resources damnit!"

amarok has a great interface lol.  Ok so it has way too much stuff going on, but it's not a programming abomination like iTunes is lol.

I use audacious because I've never bothered to compile XMMS since ubuntu dropped it from their repositories.  (I have a ton of awesome xmms themes lol).

I also mainly listen to metal.

I did a few times (for the theme collection I had built up... all black), but got bored of it. If I want to compile stuff, there's always Gentoo to boot into ;-)

i listen to pretty much everything.

as for formats, MP3s, CDs, and records at home, MP3s at work, and MP3s, CDs, and local FM (WRAS, WREK, WABE) in the car.

i use rhythmbox. amarok is horrific to look at, it's like someone took outlook 2007 and jammed a music player into it.

My music player of choice is the exception to a lot of my personal rules and preference for software... iTunes...

Rhythmbox is an acceptable substitute for Linux though. Heard lots of good things about Amarok, but it's user interface single handedly represents all that is wrong with Linux =P
One thing I really like about Amarok is the "stop playing after track" option. I had always wanted that, so I've been using Amarok ever since.
i have seen unix admins with john deere trucker hats, and even seen a man in a nascar shirt correct a passerby's klingon.

Good: a thread about music that I can bump (and necro) to which I wasn't the last poster.

And why do I do this? I have found on YouTube something for those here who like Baroque:

and what comes close to the ultimate sixties music video...

a cover of a tune by the 'sixties most popular group, on a Moog Synthesizer, with a video of fashions from that year as its visual accompaniment.

And here's another one of similar quality:

I mostly listen to MP3 anymore, and I listen to a lot of music on Youtube. Unfortunate, since the quality stinks but at least it's free (or cheap via iTunes). I really can't stand iTunes as a platform though. As for music, I mostly listen to various forms of punk and indie rock.

Moc is text mode though.

After one music player started to annoy me (xmms?) I spent ages hunting around looking for one that suited my folder-based collection of music. I eventually gave moc a go; tweakable enough for my liking, and I don't miss the graphical side of things at all. In fact whilst playing it's usually minimised.

I use XMPlay. I listen to a bunch of chiptunes and module-based music (mod, XM, IT) so it's important to have a player that handles them properly.

Wow.  Necro in more ways than one.
Yes; not only is it a reply to a really old thread, but the videos are of really old music, played on really old instruments (i.e. the Moog Synthesizer), and feature in the video portion really old fashions.

What can I say?

Oh, and here's a music video on YouTube that beats Ripster at one of his own games:

It's in English instead of Wu, though. Maybe one of the special features on the DVD?

Speaking of music from movies made by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, here's an amazing rendition of the theme from the original Indiana Jones movie on an Electone organ by a young lady in Japan:

However, this time, she isn't wearing her dragon costume. (Yes, I found this one by looking at other videos related to the Final Fantasy one from the video game music thread in "Other Geeky Stuff".)

And here's another virtuoso performance, this time of a movie by George Locas by himself:

But she doesn't always play video game music when she puts her dragon costume back on:

Yes, that's Jazz!

Oh, and at the start of this one...

she's showing off a bit - playing this electronic organ (perhaps a Yamaha Electone STAGEA ELS-01C, but I'm not certain of the model) with her back turned to it.

I almost only listen to the net cast radio channel Nectarine Scene Music.
( Web page: http://www.scenemusic.net/demovibes/
Stream: http://demovibes.de:8000/necta48.aac )

As player I use:
Amiga: HippoPlayer ( http://www.s2.org/~k-p/prods.html )
Windows: Deliplayer ( http://www.brothersoft.com/deliplayer-62987.html )
Linux: Moc ( http://moc.daper.net/ )
Android: DroidSound ( http://swimsuitboys.com/droidsound/ )

I also use Spotify quite a lot.

At last! A mechanical keyboard with Trackpoint of my own! Now with Hyper-Scroll! And also Ergo-Clear switches. Ohh... look... custom keys! :D

Incidentally, I've been doing a bit more research. While Yamaha does not make the Electone Stagea electronic organs available in North America or Europe, they do make something else available - the Tyros 4 Arranger Workstation - which apparently embodies the same technology, but in a more compact package at a lower price.

Clavia's line is loved by musicians for the great organ emulation.

That turns out to be from Nord Keyboards, a company I had not even heard of. The Nord Wave sounds very interesting, offering the flexibility of a virtual analog synthesizer along with the use of a wide library of samples.

I took a look out there at the selection of keyboards in the "Arranger Keyboard" and "Keyboard Workstation" categories, and I see that there are many choices, all the way from the Casio WK-3800 to more expensive keyboards like the Yamaha Tyros 4 or the KORG PS2X.
