Winkeyless B.87 Acrylic (Watermelon)- Build Log
« on: Sat, 25 April 2015, 05:26:38 »
First of all, this is still at the phase of collecting my items, ordered, paid, just waiting for them to arrive. If you're not interested, do not proceed reading below.

Intoduction: I was using a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate for more than 3 years, and it was the first generation with MX Blue switches. Well it was awesome back then, but I sort of don't love it anymore. I saw the mechanical keyboard thread at a local PC enthusiast forum, which some of them have some really nice OTDs/Kmacs. All that triggered the switch in my brain, I must get Korean custom keyboard!!

Well, then I found GH, which I knew for a long time, but only read as guest. I registered and I started looking for nice Korean keyboards, first thing that appeared was the TX87, but the wait is unknown, I can't be waiting months for that. Then I reached out to Zennasyndroxx, he recommended me to take a look at Winleyless, and I got attracted, don't ask me why I didn't choose GON.

There it goes my journey begins! I ordered through Zennasyndroxx, as he had friends that are buying as well, thus we share the shipping cost. First he offered to build it for me, what a nice guy to deal with, but I opted to build it myself, because I really like building stuff and I built a MG Justice Gundam. This caused me to spend more money buying all the gears require for the job as I will proceed to build more boards in future.

Well, I think you guys wouldn't want to read all that crap above, so we proceed to the checklist below.

Checklist:
Paid and on the way
   ✓ B.87 white PCB
✓ Acrylic case with RGB diffuser [matte frost, matte red, matte frost housing, matte frost feet]
   ✓ SMD diodes + resistors
   ✓ Cherry stabilizers
   ✓ 62g Korean springs
   ✓ RGB LED strip
   ✓ White LEDs
   ✓ GMK Red Alert
   ✓ Hakko FX888D
   ✓ Kester solder
✓ Hot keys Project artisan keycaps
✓ Cherry MX Clears (110 pcs)
✓ Krytox lubes GPL205 and GPL 104 from SPRiT
   ✓ Switch stickers from Winkeyless
✓ Bunch of Golden goodies from SPRiT
   ✓ Custom USB cables
   ✓ Hakko Solder vacuum
   ✓ Vetus Precision tweezer

Elaboration: So far I've paid $658 for this project, including the tools that I need. The most expensive thing in this build is the GMK Red Alert key set, if you read the group buy section for the set, you'll see why I said so. As for the rest of the items, I'll buy the switches from WASD and the rest from GON and other places. Stay tuned for the rest of the build if you want, things will be arriving starting from next week, and I'll have photos to show you guys.

Expected Building start from 7th of May. 3rd week of June

Pictures:

-GMK Red Alert Key set  :p

-Hot Keys Project
 - Raven Smoke - Red eyes "MK exclusive"

 -Raven Smoke - Yellow eyes

 -Raven White - Red eyes

 -Warmaster White - Red eyes

-Krytox GPL205

-SPRiT Goldies

A small announcement:
Problems solved !! I end up reorder the B87, and it should be on the way soon. Stay tuned.

Hmm, how long will it take? Well, I know it is really hard to control the time frame for group buy, I will start building once my stuff are in. But that will be one more week away I guess.

It would be a couple weeks for the GB to end, which means you wouldn't get them on time I guess

Yeah, because I'm gonna get some Krytox from GON as well, so I'll just get the stickers from him. Anyway, thanks for your interest in my build and thanks for suggesting the GB.  :D

Some the stuff that I'm working on for my B87 project.  :D

My defective switch tool

Some 62g V1.2

Stock spring, 62g V1.2, 55g V1.1S

GPL205 and 104 that I'll use for switch lubing

86 MX Clears

Took apart in 30 minutes

Red sticker

86 switches all stickered

Done lubing , I mixed GPL205 & GPL104 to about 1:1 in ratio

Hope you guys like it so far  :D

FYI if you work on not soldered switches, it's much easier to open them with a flat head screwdriver to lift up the sides  rather than a "ghetto switch opener" to open from the top of the switch.

It actually looks red in real life, but my camera captured it pinkish.

RGB effect is still not so great, still awaiting for the RGB LED strip and some white switch LEDs.

Man that looks awesome!!!

I should have been more clear with my previous message.
i was wondering if you had the rest of the acrylic layers for the case not including the RGB diffuser (the lower layers 3 and 4) i'm curious on what just the stock acrylic case without the diffuser looks like.

The acrylic diffuser also makes you choose the other 2 layers, so he didn't get the other layers unless he bought a full acrylic case as well

Nope! A cheaper alternative to the diffuser is to get the bottom 2 or 3 layers in frosted clear acrylic

There are 2 ways, either the BBB case, which is 4 layers of acrylic "sandwich", or the diffuser case. I got the diffuser case, so that's only 3 pieces. The diffuser case is CNCed. Then the feet that raise the keyboard to the angle is 3 layer of acrylic again. Every layer can choose what color you want.

I'll take a couple shots of the structure of the case later. :)

Wow great job!!
I think it would better to get the RGB strip or X2 PCB.
Anyway, as the first experience,
I respect you not to give up building it yourself.

Hi Hojin,

Nice to see you hang around in GH.

I have the RGB strip, still with Aaron. 10 of the RGB LEDs looks great already. Can't imagine another 10 of them.

Thanks for the praise.

Well, I'll have to start somewhere right? :)

Thanks. If you're not so sure about the options, you can send them an email, they are very friendly and helpful. Overall it's quite solid, can't match aluminum ones but are as good as it can be for an acrylic keyboard ;)

Still awaiting to complete the build. Really can't wait :D

Been awhile since I last update this build log   :D

I've added white LEDs and the RGB strip so now I get the full 'Bling' effect!
And I actually rebuild the keyboard, changed the sticker to green to match the name that my friend named it, 'Watermelon:))
I also tuned the stabilizers, now it's as crisp as it gets.

I guess it's bad to update a build log without some pictures. So here you go.

That bling though, much love  :p
Oh, if you noticed that cable, I made it  ;)

Hope you guys like it. Really sorry for updating this build log after months.  :D
