Weird Question: Were any Model M's made on Sunday?
« on: Wed, 29 April 2015, 02:01:43 »
I was thinking it would be cool to get a model m made on the same day I was, but that was on a Sunday.

I looked at the manufacturing dates for 50 listings on ebay and I found them for every day but Saturday or Sunday. However I found that the large majority of them were made on Tuesday. Less than 10 might have been not Tuesday. So I'm not sure if my sample size was too small.

So does anyone actually know if they did or not? I could see the factories having been closed on weekends but I'm not sure.

I had the same thought and did a similar thing. Not a certainty but it does look like IBM was not rolling out the production lines on Sundays.

I also recall hearing something somewhere but I cannot remember which further suggested that they didn't operate on Sundays but yet again cannot be certain, and what if there were a few weeks which required some weekend overtime to meet deadlines etc.

Maby someone should ask Unicomp, I mean they litterally started a company to keep a keyboard alive surely someone there might know.

I was afraid of that.  :'( It would make total sense for them to have been closed on Sundays so I'm not surprised. I guess settling for my b-day on any year will have to do.

I'll have to check the actual keyboard to be sure, but I at least have documented that I have a keyboard from May 24, 1992, which was a Sunday. It's possible that I copied the date wrong, but I can take a look later today.

And, thinking about it, I was born on a Sunday and I'm pretty sure I saw a keyboard with that day. Exactly once. It was an SSK, and I wasn't interested in/willing to spend for one. So I'm guessing they're rare, but that some may exist for at least some Sundays.

(Now I'm wondering if it's normal to have a spreadsheet documenting the manufacture dates of keyboards you own...)

Click on the databases and check to see if the dates in the spreadsheets include a Sunday.

Just checked for the 1391401 database; 19 of ~2300 keyboards were from a Sunday.

I just found one!

I think considering the low numbers of Sunday boards. It would be safe to say that Sunday production was either only to meet large orders/contracts, done on a trial basis, a number printing error or certain factories may have been open on certain Sundays.

Ohhh such fun

It was these:
More
06/07/87
06/07/87
07/05/87
08/02/87
08/23/87
01/08/89
06/11/89
09/01/91
09/01/91
09/01/91
09/01/91
04/19/92
03/21/93
03/21/93
03/21/93
03/21/93
05/16/93
12/12/93
02/25/96

The number duplicate dates may be suggestive. They seem to come from a variety of factories, and 3/21/93 shows four (or three, I don't understand their system) different factories. I don't know there's enough data to draw conclusions.

Incidentally, while I've got this in a spreadsheet, here's the break down by day:
Sunday19
Monday421
Tuesday449
Wednesday467
Thursday428
Friday419
Saturday94

I've been super busy with work and just now got back to here.

@jeb thanks for finding this info! So there is hope! The fact that it seems about 0.8% of 1391401's were made on Sunday it a bit discouraging but will make getting it all that much sweeter! I'm looking for a 92 which seems to have an ever lower rate so I'll have to keep an extra eye out!
