I'm knee deep now
« on: Sat, 13 June 2015, 11:30:01 »
Just signed up, hi GH!  I've had a couple Das mech boards for a few years, eventually came across r/mkb, got interested in all of the crazy customization going on out there, which of course led me here!

I suppose the precipitating event was my parents' Rosewill RK9000 succumbing to the USB port issue, discovering it must have been a refurb cuz the PCB was already kinda chewed up and clearly resoldered a couple times, then finding out about how I could wiring it up with a matrix and a Teensy.  GH helped me figure out what to do, and at this point I've sliced the numpad section off the plate and am going to chop up and reuse the case to turn it into a topless TKL with 58g ergo clears.

I went from just digging browns to heavy modification of a board in about 2 months, I'm a little scared where this is going!

I second this, it sounds like a great project! I'd love to read a build-log and take a look at some pictures.

Sure, I'll snap some pics going forward. It's a pretty slow process since I'm waiting for various things in the mail and I haven't done anything like this before, but a build thread sounds like fun and could wind up being super useful.

And yeah wallethack is right, haha.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Have you still got the Das boards?

And yes, please do post pictures of your Rosewill mods in the area.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yup! Typing on the Das 4 right now.  Thinking about selling the Model S as my collection diversifies, but the 4 is such a nice board.

I started a thread in the making stuff area, will update with progress!  May be posting some stuff about the ~8 Apple IIe boards I salvaged the other day, 6 SMKs and 2 SKCC vintage T alps!

You can always keep the extra keyboards as a display board for spare keycap sets.
