Duck Octagon custom-built USB problem
« on: Wed, 22 July 2015, 15:38:24 »
My Duck Octagon stopped working today, when i plug it in no lights come on and the keyboard does not function. i have made no changes, it stopped working while i was playing a game.
i am assuming that the USB port is broken, as the same cable works with my HHKB. none of my soldering appears to have broken, the switches all appear to be in properly, and even if one of them wasn't, it wouldn't stop the keyboard from working.
how would i go about fixing this? any advice would be hugely appreciated :)

Here is a photo of the USB port on the keyboard http://i.imgur.com/OQilgiS.jpg the quality of the image isn't great but you can see that the pins don't seem to be bent at all

Did you try another cable? Do you have a multimeter to verify your soldering is ok?

yeah i tried it with multiple cables and it didn't work, i don't have one but i can buy one.
but if the soldering on one switch was wrong, would it prevent the whole keyboard from working?

It depends how the controller is programmed.  Maybe holding one key down (failed short switch) is a problem for the controller.

First step is to open the board. Measure with your meter and make sure power is getting to the controller and verify all the switches are switching.

You can try to update the keyboard firmware.

Oh that sucks, maybe you can mail it to me and I'll see what I can do to get it fixed.  :p

All joking aside, does your computer register a usb device added when plugged in?
If it does, then probably just need to reflash the firmware

If not, it really may be a solder issue. It could also be an Electro Static Discharge (ESD) issue. Did you happen to shock the board by any chance while moving around your seat?

I would open it up and inspect the circuit board very carefully (ground yourself first).

The device is not recognised when i plug it in.
I suppose i'll have to buy a multimeter and test the switches individually to see if one of them is not connected properly

edit: my pc is now detecting it when i connect it while holding the FLIP key, but when trying to re-flash it in 02d keymapper i'm getting the error 'DFU programmer not found', though the drivers are installed

Hmm that's odd.

Try booting up your pc to the BIOS and see if it can detect any of your keyboard presses.

It sounds like a messed up controller.  I've never had a duck board so I'm not sure how to go about re-flashing it.

I saw the new 02d firmware for octagon dated 7/12/2015 on kbdlab.  Maybe you'd want to try that.

Did you manage to solve this problem? I believe I have the same issue with my Octagon V2, but in my case it is definitely not the USB connection and /or cable.
