Chicony KB-7061 (my new great found)
« on: Sat, 25 July 2015, 04:47:04 »
Hi,
I wanted to share with you another great found for my retro keyboard collection, which is Chicony KB-7061

Keyboard is in very good condition, little bit yellowish from the front, also delivery was not so successful, because very heavy metal board which is inside, smashed small plastic pins which stick plate in the place.
Anyway I have used very strong glue and It's already fixed.

Sadly for now I can't provide you pictures of this beauty, but I promise to do so in the future.

Other galleries:

Also I would like to ask you about control diodes "NUM LOCK, CAPS LOCK, SCROLL LOCK"
Even if those options are off these diodes are shine a little, very gently, but it's noticeable.
Also when you press other buttons they are shine even more till you release button.
Also if you press multiple buttons like 8 or even more, they shine even stronger, very noticeable.

Should I be worry? I fell in love with this keyboard...

Seriously, ALPS (white) switches are so nice, I hear singing of the Angels when I press them.

Please give me good news that everything is just fine with my keyboard!

PS.
I have noticed that ALPS I have are different, I mean symbols on them.
What does it mean? It is possible that actuation force is different for different parts of keyboard?

Thank you!

I agree, white Alps are pretty cool. They type very nicely, and like almost all Alps switches, they sound great. The markings you speak of are just production notes, they have nothing to do with the build of the switches. As far as I'm aware, Alps never made switches with variable weighting like on Topre boards, so all your switches should feel the same (ca. 70 gf).

If you love these White Alps, you should keep an eye open for a board with Blue Alps in it - they are the predecessor of White Alps and sound and feel even better. They're rare though, and tend to be expensive.

Before I get this keyboard I used Chicony KB-5191 with Futaba switches, but after few days with ALPS I can't use Futaba anymore. Just kidding :) I like Futaba too, but Futaba is not so perfect, not so delicate... simply Futaba is not an ALPS :)
For sure I will hunt for more ALPS keyboards , sadly I live in Poland where hunting is very hard.
Thank you for your answer!

By the way I love your YouTube channel, you have great voice, pleasure to listen and watch!  :thumb:

Cheers mate, glad you like them! Be sure to keep an eye out for the video I'm uploading later today ;) .

I haven't tried Futabas yet myself, actually. I more or less purposely panned before them because they have a somewhat mixed reputation, but I'd like to try them at some point :) .

I find white Alps too heavy but they're great if you like heavy switches.

I have a Chicony KB-5181 with Monterey blue Alps that are a little lighter and softer. Nice thing about white Alps is they are easier to come across at reasonable prices.

I will watch for sure! :)

Hard to explain the feeling when you type on Futaba, but for sure is enjoyable, but it's all subjective. Futaba are unsteady like metal spring under your finger.
When you compare them to ALPS, then you will see ALPS are more advanced and professional.

To be honest they are light for me, I tried play FPS games on this keyboard, and I was amazed when I try to do bunny hops, I'm able to do "bunny hopping" better with ALPS :D

I'm addicted keyboard collector now, even if I have for now only two keyboards.
I hope that in the near future I will try switches you are talking about :)

I have a Chicony KB-5191 w/ Futaba switches...as well.  I wont try to describe them here, but it's no contest, I like the Alps tactile/clickies much better. Smoother, tighter operation.

Hey Mechanical Chick,

There are brand new in box Focus FK-2001 (Portuguese) keyboards listed on eBay currently, for relatively cheap. You might be interested in.

Please note that these are NOT white Alps, but instead a rather ****ty clone. They also don't have the trademark dust cover (see my FK-2002 review). There are always 2001s with real Alps on eBay though, and they're really cool :) .

Cool, I've been typing on a Chicony 5191 (cherry mx blue) since 1991. Stupid thing refuses to die. Pretty yellow indeed compared to the ibm that is sitting next to it.

And then one day you will try SKCM Blue and wonder why you ever liked Whites.  ;)
I proxy anything including keyboards (キーボード / 鍵盤), from both Japan (日本) and China (中國). For more information, you may visit my dedicated webpage here: https://www.keyboards.es/proxying.html

I agree with @chyros, I will skip this one, but thank you! :)

I hope so! I want to try out all keyboard switches in the world!  ;D
But for now I enjoy ALPS (white) soooo much!
It is real pleasure to use this keyboard! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to remind you about my primary question.
Do you think my control diodes are fine?
Keyboard is working just fine, but this is strange to me that they illuminate when they are OFF.
