Topre dilemma

Ok so I've ordered Hypershere's silencing rings from eBay and thinking of doing my first keyboard mod, which is to silence my 55g 87U.

Then it got me thinking... since everyone is saying the endgame board is a HHKB with 55g domes, why not do that?

I already have all the necessary ingredients to perform this mod. Now the question is, should I just wait for the silencing rings to arrive and do the mod on the RF? Or should I just go ahead and move some of the 55g domes to my Type-S? I'm thinking of doing numbers, alphas, and spacebar only to keep it "uniform" both on the HHKB and the remainder of the RF board.

Not gonna do it to say my black HHKB though as I might be too lazy to do 2 mods to a black board at once, and plus, I bought a Type-S to get that baller logo in the case anyway :D

Personally I wouldn't, because then there would be one less 55g 87U in the world :(

Unless you are in a rush, just enjoy both keyboards as they are for now.

Also dampening rings with non-Type S sliders will force the keys to be depressed by the thickness of the rings.  Type S gets around that by having slightly thinner bases on the sliders, to allow a little extra room for the silencing bits.

Need to buy another 55g RF before I make a 55g HHKB. Love my 55g RF too much to ruin it. #firstworldprobz

Everyone needs to decide for himself on such questions as whether or not to install Silencing Rings or to do a dome transplant. My own experience has been that both procedures are worth the expense and effort. My RF87UB55 went from refined to sublime by installing Silencing Rings. In addition, I have a Type-S HHKB Pro 2, but my black HHKB Pro 2 sounds and feels better than the Type-S after installing Silencing Rings. In comparison, I put both 55g domes and Silencing Rings in another black HHKB Pro 2, and I consider the Rings to have made more of a difference than the domes. I've not noticed any difference in key travel after installing the Rings in either a RF or HHKB.

I thought that for a long time as well because the silent 87Us still maintained the same key travel as standard. In Realforce's case, they use a different switch housing (purple) to accommodate the silencing material. However, according to PFU, the HHKB Type-S has reduced key travel. 3.8mm vs 4mm for non-silenced. I suspect PFU uses the same case for both models. And since the HHKB uses case mounted switches, that would explain the reduced key travel. I'm not saying 3.8mm is bad. In fact, it may very well feel better than 4mm. The point is simply that the HHKB Type-S does in fact have reduced key travel.
