would people use it? A forum really isn't optimal for this kind of thing. The site wouldn't handle transactions, no fees and no ads either but I won't be able to keep it up long-term if nobody ever donates.

I already have an address I don't use. It could even be hosted here if iMav is game (I doubt it because that's another potential security vulnerability)

PS I have done freelance web development in the past, this isn't a pipe dream. It would be simple to set the site up if anyone cares to have it.

Why is this needed exactly?

You can't look through pictures without entering a thread. If you want to give something away you post once in the free stuff thread and hope someone sees it. It's just nowhere near optimal for a variety of reasons. I wasn't going to say anything, but I was digging through the forum and noticed some of my sentiments have been shared.

If nobody wants it, whatever, it's just an idea.

I am not sure if I understood well; please clarify: did you wrote that people should donate to keep a thing like this running?

If it did come to exist, it would either be funded by donations or it would die. No, I'm not asking for donations, but I would need to at a later point if people want this to happen (I'm pretty sure nobody does)

I suppose if it does come to pass and gets big enough, you could throw some ads up that would help keep the lights on.

I say put a little more thought into explaining your concept, maybe with an example page or something? To me it's just a very vague idea.

I mean I can put things in classifieds here, on r/mechmarket, deskthorty and eBay as it stands, I have yet to not sell anything I really wanted to sell and typically thing sell very quickly.

Besides there are enough scammers around as is, it seems like this 'alternative' could possibly just give them more chances.

I think that this forum would derive a lot of benefit if it could ding all transactions for a fee of 1%-2% or something innocuous.

Also, I think that the selling procedures are seriously dysfunctional.

Why does a person with 1 item to sell post it into a 2-year-old thread where you have to go back 4 pages to see what that single item is?

That is beyond retarded and so cumbersome that I often don't bother.

I believe that there should be one thread per item (or handful of items for sale at the same time) and it should evaporate not long after the sale is consummated.
From the US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8 :

The   Congress   shall have Power
To declare War,  grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;
To provide for calling forth the Militia  to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

You're right. There's no need for it, and I don't want to keep wasting people's time. You're welcome to delete the thread. It's just something that occurred to me while putting some things in the free stuff thread. I realized that, chances are, nobody who needs a functioning Omnikey controller will ever see that I posted there.

As an example, it would work pretty much exactly like eBay, but transactions would be handled personally, and not through the site's server.

Edit: Oh yeah, you're not a moderator. But a moderator is welcome to delete the thread. Please.

This is just because people don't want to wait for a new thread to be approved by a moderator. But it really doesn't stop abuse.

One of the benefits of ebay, is the mediation ebay does in case the transaction runs bad. I have experienced that people usually respond well to ebay intervention. I think, here that sort of assistant will not be available; therefore, I wonder what could be the possible benefit of the site, besides maybe more exposure, or easy of use.

Wait, what? Why give up so quick?

I AM a moderator, and I'm curious to hear what this is all about. What format would the posts accumulate in? How would the data get there (scraped off geekhack or entered by the user manually)? I'm having a hard time (actually too easy of a time :P ) imagining this because there are so many options. What did you have in mind in particular?

Info would have to be entered manually. You fill out as many fields as you can pertaining to info like manufacturer, condition, switch type, accessory type, etc. If you need to get your hands on, say, an FK-2001 cover hinge, you might search for an entire keyboard that's in poor shape/broken. If you find a seller, you contact him to work something out. Someone might have a couple they're willing to give away (like me).

Items wouldn't expire, but if someone became impossible to contact their pages would become hidden from search results, etc. This is how it would differ from eBay. Listings might stay up for a year and a half before someone bites. And it would differ from the classifieds in that listings are easy to browse for the buyer and maintain for the seller (no bumping, no maintenance at all).

If you're only interested in artisan caps, you'll only see artisan classifieds. Or filter them out if you're not. If you want to offer a nice deal to members of the community only, and avoid resellers, you can do that. Link your GH account. Giveaway by random drawing a la Steamgifts. Why not? Also, feedback, but I don't know if that's really relevant around here. All my dealings have been positive.

But this thing would have to have some kind of semi-wide adoption to be useful to anybody, which is why I realized it's a silly idea.

Even if it was something like what swill did with this GH60 page would be cool. http://gh60-market.swillkb.com/

If you could filter, look at prices, sort locations, etc. Would make buying/selling 100x easier.

That'd be one way to browse the site, but I'd also like to have a mode which includes pictures, like any typical auction site/marketplace.

i'm terrified of the smf code (look at what youtube tags do to threads) but a lot of this could probably be implemented directly in the forum software.

Sounds interesting, if you host the pics externally and keep the theme light hosting costs should be minimal though I have no idea what that means in today's market.

I really like the idea but I'm not active enough in the trade or salvage arenas to consider donating regularly to keep it running, and I suspect that will be the same for most users.

Subscribing...  I am currently working on a group buy service type site, but its purpose is very different from this.

My advice. Build a super bare bones version and get it in front of people. See what the feedback is and then go from there.

Your page is cool man, I just wonder how much exposure it has, as you can see I am an old member here, but I was not aware of your marketplace.

Ya. That site is something I threw together in a few hours because people were asking for the functionality in the GH60 thread.  It is linked in the OP of the GH60 buying/selling/trading thread.

I have not been very active in promoting it. I should try to get all my apps and such in my signature.  I will revamp that stuff when I launch the new GB site.

Thanks.  :)  I try to build stuff to enable people. GH is a great community full of people who build stuff, so it is a fun place to participate.
