My first Ergodox build
« on: Sat, 10 October 2015, 13:48:55 »
Hey all, building my first ergodox and needed to shout from the rooftops somewhere...

Just finished soldering everything but the switches:

Pardon my soldering, first time.

Still waiting on my case so I can solder the switches to the board (Stuck in customs at the moment).

Decided to attach cables and test my work by jumping the contacts where the switches could be.... and EVERYTHING WORKED!!

lol. Sorry nothing crazy here... just excited.

Your soldering looks shiny so that's good, many people who post about their first Ergodox do so because they're having problems so you should be proud as well as excited :)

What do you have planned for keycaps?

Going with pbt dsa blank caps from pmk.

Going with a faux carbon fibre case from falbatech.

Black modifiers, orange base, with some 2, oranges for most outward thumb keys.

Orange LEDs (not sure if I'll even be able to see them, hopefully through side of case).

Having an orange tent 3d printed.

The waiting is killing me... Constantly refreshing USPS tracking.

So I'm building my second Ergodox already. This one is going surprisingly quick, only took two hours.

I bought someone's unopened massdrop kit, and it came with blank black DSA caps.

Am I crazy or does this keycap set not have any distinct home key caps?

If they are signature plastics DSA sets there are some slightly deeper keycaps. They are called deep dish but there is not much deep about them. It's not too easy to spot them, but once you have one to compare you will constantly be spotting people with misplaced deep dish keycaps.

I have the SP set on my completed dox (shown above) and found the deepdish keys without a problem. But this keyset is from the massdrop kit. Not sure if they are signature plastics. I don't see the deepdish keys in the set.

Oh sorry. I see them myself now :)
If you look at the images on the massdrop page it looks like they are not included

With only a couple of days of usage, this is my current layout: https://keyboard-configurator.massdrop.com/ext/ergodox/?referer=NF98ZW&hash=b628d9c48c1b73467941ef38536c628d

Although, I've been changing it gradually. I'm a software engineer and needed the =+ key much closer then the default placement. Also wanted space/enter available on the left hand for when mousing around and confirming dialogs.

Very nice job.

Never thought of 3d printing feet wedges - DOH!!!

My ergodox has cheap extruded abs case - next build will be with plates (for serviceability reasons primarily, aesthetics secondarily).

Very nice keyboard. That carbon fiber make it really stand out from most of the ergodox
