Help Me Choose a Switch
« on: Tue, 03 November 2015, 19:11:37 »
So, I'm in the market for an mechanical keyboard. I've never owned one before, but I have an idea of what I'd like. The only switches I've tried are Cherry MX/Kaihl, but I'm not limiting my options to just those. I'd like keys that are clicky and shallower. I'm not a big fan of linear switches like Reds and Blacks. Blacks in particular feel too stiff. Browns feel a bit mushy to me as well. Blues are the best out of the Cherry switches I've tried, but again, I could get other switches. I've particularly been looking at an NMB RT8255C+ with black Hi-Tek switches, but I don't know how they feel, so I have no idea if they'd be a good fit with respect to my tastes. Thanks in advance for any help!

Black Hi-Teks are very nice! You will be pleasantly surprised but they can't (reasonably) be found without the "bigass" enter key.

SMK makes some very nice light clicky keys, too, also in vintage layouts.
“No political truth is of greater intrinsic value, or is stamped with the authority of more enlightened patrons of liberty: The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands .… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison, Federalist 47
“All the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judiciary, result to the legislative body. The concentrating of these in the same hands, is precisely the definition of despotic government. An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for; but one .... in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among several bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits, without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” — Thomas Jefferson, commentary on Federalist 48

You're in luck, I made a video review of just that; an NMB RT8255C+ with black space invaders in it xD . Hope you find it useful! :)

I'd say space invaders are definitely better than Cherries, but they're on the stiff side, possibly too heavy for you from what you say. For light clicky switches, you might want to try a board with SMK Alps mount switches ("Montereys") in them (of which I also have a video).
Check my keyboard video reviews:

I found a keyboard with SMK Cherry Mounts: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321899769419?pb=14&&autorefresh=true
Would the mount make a difference in the feel of it? And are these switches good for my needs?
