shine 5 defective or just an issue overall with the keyboard?
« on: Mon, 23 November 2015, 04:17:00 »
I just got a Shine 5 last week and while using it on RGB LED Blending mode, with "reactive mode advanced", certain keys won't light up when I press down on it until I recycle through all of the available lighting modes again.  Is my keyboard defective or is it a more widespread issue with the Shine 5?

This is a firmware bug.
All shine 4s and shine 5's have this bug with reactive mode advanced.
Ducky has a beta firmware for the year of the goat and for the Shine 4/fire 69 (two different firmwares, not 1, but shine 4 and shine fire 69 use the exact same firmware) which fixes reactive mode advanced completely.  It (referring to YOTG) might also work with the shine 5 (I'm not sure if the firmwares are 100% identical because the shine 5 caps/num/scroll lock indicators are also replicated on the RGB key itself, while on the YOTG, those keys follow the normal backlight layout and there are separate indicators for them above the number keypad).

Send an email to ducky support and ask if you can test the beta firmware for the reactive mode advanced fix.  There's one for both the YOTG (not sure if this works on shine 5) and another one for Shine 4/fire edition.  I don't have ducky's permission to distribute the firmware (they didn't say I couldn't, but it's sort of...unethical).

Which keys is it?

On my Shine 3 by default a couple of keys reflect the lighting level or something, and you need to press a function combination to get them to light up with the rest of the board.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

In the regard of firmware, where do I find that Beta firmware for the Ducky Shine 4 ? I just upgraded my Ducky Shine 3's, but I dont find any Beta firmware or rather any firmware update for the Shine 4 on their Website.

Ducky Shine 3 TKL (MX-Blue/Green LEDs) - Ducky Shine 3 (MX-Red/Pink LEDs) - Ducky Shine 4 (MX-Blue/Red&Blue LEDs) - CM Storm Quickfire TK (MX-Brown/White LEDs) - TTeSports Poseidon Z RGB (Kailh-Blue)

You have to send an email to ducky support.
The firmware has not been released yet.
The bug affecting the shine 4 and shine 5/YOTG are basically the same bug, so when I reported it (it took me months to follow up on the original report I did in April, on the shine 4, though..i only followed up after buying the YOTG and seeing the same bug), they made new firmware for both models.

Neither have been released yet, as they're in beta.  I'm almost 100% sure that they are still adding features to it.  Just email them and tell them you want the reactive mode advanced bugfix.
I DO know that the YOTG beta firmware fixed a "space bar+TAB or spacebar+W (not such which key combo) bug that affected the shine 5.
