I seldom listen to albums; I wrote a small script to load random songs from random albums to my MP3 player until it's full. Probably the last few albums I listened to in their entirety were
  • Welcome Interstate Managers - Fountains of Wayne
  • Traffic and Weather - Fountains of Wayne
  • Love - The Beatles
  • Poodle Hat - 'Wierd' Al Yankovic
  • Spunk - The Sex Pistols
  • Homemade Sampler of Rage Against the Machine
The Brat Prince of COBOL

Road, you wouldn't happen to look like John Cusak, would you? ;)

Ripster, Melody Gardot's puts out some pretty sweet notes and she's got a story that can't be beat. I don't have that album of hers yet. I have her first one though.

In no particular order, here's a list of album like groupings on my playlist right now:

1) Tom Waits - Glitter and Doom Tour live recording
2) Chris Trapper - Hey You
3) Anthony Molinaro, Howard Levy - The Molinaro-Levy Project
4) Nick Lowe - Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe
5) Tanya Donelly - Beauty Sleep
6) Vienna Teng - Inland Territory
7) Kronos Quartet & Tom Waits
8) Regina Spektor - Far
9) Martin Sexton - Misc. Live Recordings
10) Jackie Greene - Giving Up the Ghost

Now that his kids are almost grown, I hope Tom Waits decides to do a few more tours. He's on my list of performers I have to see before one of us dies. I hear you about the poseur part, but I think that's more or less how he intends to come across these days. I remember reading an article about him somewhere that mentioned that he and his wife see the part of Tom Waits playing Tom Waits as part of the performance and the good performers always keep you guessing as to who they really are.

I've always been fascinated with his lyrical skills and his storytelling. My wife (who's a composer) is fascinated by his seemingly plain musical arrangements. She tells me that they're not plain at all and you really have to know what you're listening to in order to appreciate what he and his wife do with their arrangements.

If you haven't read it before, Wild Years: The Music and Myth of Tom Waits by Jay Jacobs is a really fun Tom Waits bio.

Not really, but it doesn't hurt that my GF really likes her, too.  Sade is nowhere near as corny as BW.  In fact, most of her songs are pretty depressing (cheating, poverty, etc., especially King of Sorrows).  I can only think of a handful of songs I would consider "make-out music."  Even though she's over 50 now, Sade is still hawt.

Not really.  Zero7 and Kaki King stand out more to me, but I have pretty wide taste in music.  Everything from Boards of Canada to Donny Hathaway to Canadian Brass to Diana Krall to Gangstarr.  It's one that growing up in the early days of Hip Hop teaches a person.  When listening to some of the best producers (J. Dilla, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, The Beatnuts, etc.), they pull inspiration from all forms of music.  It exposes people to forms of music that they, otherwise, might not listen to.  While I listened to a lot music that inspired Hip Hop when I was a kid, I discovered much more later.

Sorry I've never heard of John Cusak - I'll have to look him up.

I like allsorts of music - Baroque, Blues, Avant-Garde, Metal, Prog-Rock, Reggae-Dub, Dub Poetry, Ska, Latin, British Folk, Middle-Eastern music, Classical Indian.

I'm not that into C&W and rap though.

Oh do you mean John Cusack - the American actor? I look nothing like him.

I have been told that I have a passing resemblance to John Lennon though FWIW.

Upps, pardon my spelling. Anyway, it was a inside joke. I should have made a reference to the movie High Fidelity in which Jon Cusack plays an obsessive compulsive record store owner who's constantly making top ten lists of albums and songs that relate to his life experiences. It's a hilarious movie.
