Model F Spring in Model M
« on: Thu, 17 December 2015, 12:40:23 »
I couldn't find too many threads about it...have any of you tried putting Model F springs in a Model M?

Of the few threads I did find, most people said they didn't notice a difference, and they believed that Model F feel was affected more by other factors such as the slapping foot or the barrel.

I took a photo here of a spring from a Model M SSK and a spring from a Model F XT

I tried counting and using paint to help:

The spring on the left is the Model M, the one on the right is from the Model F

I swapped a few of the springs on an SSK with ones from the Model F and noticed that they were lighter and less mushy feeling, but I'm not sure if this is a placebo effect.

I'd like to hear from anyone else who has tried this

I tried it both ways at the same time, an M spring in an F and an F spring in an M.  An alpha key on each which I promptly forgot which it was.

No difference that I could tell.  I *think* I recall noticing a slightly different feel or sound when first testing it, but nothing noticeable when typing.

In fact, I'm not even certain if I ever switched them back...

I really can't tell you that it is just the spring that makes a difference.  I believe that on DT there is a thread about building an "F"SSK keyboard, and they went to the extreme of using the flippers as well as the springs in that.
The end result was that it did, in fact, feel like a Model F using both the springs and flippers on the keyboard.  Using just the springs, there might be a subtle, but not really a big difference.

So, the answer to your question is no.  I don't honestly think there would be much of a difference at all with just the springs.  That is why Model M keyboards actually feel different between even themselves.

I saw that thread, apparently the flippers from an F won't hit the membrane contacts on an M.  Which is too bad...I really need a model F SSK...

Deciding right now if I want to spend the time swapping out all the springs for only a small barely noticeable improvement.

I think what I am getting at is this: there is more than one variable in this problem.  The spring is just one part of the engineering.  If you really want to change the way a Model M "feels", perhaps changing the design of the hammer itself might make a significant difference.  Something that is "hammer" designed with a "flipper" element.
That might be key to making it "feel" better (or worse).

Will the pivot plate (aka flipper) from a Model F even fit properly in a Model M?

Take a look!  It's on DT.

Very cool. It's unfortunate that the PCB is the Achilles heel.
