We still have an intranet. 95% of our company calls it SharePoint, I like to call it hell.

We used tapes as well up until last year. It's still a viable cold storage option, and not a bad one at that. The backup software used to write to the tapes on the other hand....(LOOKING AT YOU BACKUPEXEC)
Oh god, and the massive robot we used to store, write to and eject our tapes was enormous. Now there is a huge space where it once was, and all our tapes got destroyed. Lol.

Like the machine that Vanessa Williams uses to steal the railgun files in the movie Eraser?

I have not seen that movie.

But it was basically a self contained storage/robot/drive enclosure that sat at the end of our DC. Probably about 18ft long, 6ft wide and 10ft high. You could walk in there and there were these robot arms on rails, and tapes stacked in two sections about 12 tapes high. A lot of storage space, but most of it was empty by the time we decom'd it because we have moved everything to virtual. Finally.

Do people not use this word anymore?
Some companies do.

I don't think anyone uses HDD any more. It's all SSD now. Am I right? :)

Okay. So what is the new word now? And why did it change? We still have local networks that host internal services for companies, no? What should I be calling this now?

LAN
Intranet is right. LAN is a much broader term. At least that his how I feel.

That is correct.

I will edit to make it more clear.  You can have several intranets in a LAN.  It's not the other way around.

tape backups

Audit came down hard for going strictly to virtual tape with no offsite backups.  The storage team had to put in new tape units to back up from the VTL disk pool and send the tape offsite.  I had to build a couple new servers to handle that as well as additional server backups.

"bureau system" - all the kids call it "cloud services" these days.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

;)

This one bugs the hell out of me. It sounded lame 20 years ago, why is it a buzzword now?

I heard somebody say "memory chips" yesterday. Haven't heard that in a long time.

I half agree with Lurch on SCSI, except the last S in SAS stands for SCSI...

CPU (Not in reference to the processor, but to the computer itself)
Mainframe (A Hollywood staple)
PATA
MFM
FD
NDS
Nuke and Pave
8.3
Apple Talk
Token Ring
CMOS
Defrag
IPX
GUI (pretty much replaced with UI/UX)
Dot Matrix
CRT
VLB/EISA/ISA... etc
Color Graphics Array
Microprocessor
Zip (now we compress or archive, we don't 'zip' files)
IRQ (I hear interrupt or interrupt requests, but not the old school IRQ anymore)
Y2k
SIMM
Daughter board
Standalone (still a thing, but not called this anymore)
Terminator (for both thin/thicknet and old school SCSI)
Vax
Warm boot
Hard reset

I'm sure I could come up with more...

And can we please retire the term Cable Modem... they neither modulate nor demodulate.

Silly Hoff.

BBS is kind of like what you'd call a forum today. Except you (typically) had to dial into them with a modem. They did a lot more than just forums though, could include chat rooms, multi-player games, etc.

Assuming they're related isn't a reach if you look at the acronyms. BBS: Bulletin Board System. BBCode: Bulletin Board Code. So if you've never used a BBS, it would be reasonable to think BBS is related to a modern forum.

They're still some BBSes around from what I understand. I was never big on them personally.

VESA
VESA is still used, but not in that context. It's a standards organization after all. For instance, we still have VESA mode on Linux systems, and people tend to call the VESA MIS standard for monitor mounts just "VESA".

Someone mentioned shareware, I liked public domain more. But the best shareware program ever developed was by far Terminate! In fact I used Terminate when I connected the first time to the internet
BBS? Yeah I had one, I even had a Fidonet node 2:410:30/thirthysomething! which reminds me:
ATZ
OK
ATX3
OK
ATT
OK
ATC2
AT&W
OK
Xmodem
Zmodem
v.32 v32bis and v.EVERYTHING (except for ZYX16800)
NS16650
Norton Commander was my best friend, along with the utilities
Norton Disk Doctor and editor
Norton Speeddisk (disk caching)
Another great program (shell actually)
4DOS
Qedit. It was a DOS editor which had no problem at all to open very extremely large text files
And for multitasking Quarterdeck's Deskview
I could go on and on... those were the days :)
