Cisco RV042G Dual WAN VPN Router $66.99 in CDW Outlet
« on: Sun, 24 January 2016, 18:05:31 »
Found this while looking for something else:
https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/CISCO-RV042G-DUAL-GIGABIT-WAN-VPN-B/3911312.aspx?pfm=srh

This is one of the fastest dual-wan routers out there according to smallnetbuilder.com.  It's not perfect or enterprise grade, but it is an awesome unit for a small business or nice overkill for a home setup.  The dual wan works well working either simultaneously or as a failover.  I have several RV016s (16 port up to 7 wan bigger brother of this unit) and they've been solid units (once you get around the bugs) for over 10 years now.

I bought a Cisco RV320 dual WAN VPN small business router a few years back. The firmware was garbage, not Cisco-like at all. I don't think I'll ever buy another non-enterprise Cisco product again.

I replaced it with a Ubiquiti Edge Router Lite which runs a rebranded Vyatta firmware, and it's been rock solid and much more pleasant to configure. I haven't set it up for Dual WAN yet but everything I've read says it works well.

This is not Cisco enterprise-grade, so it won't have Cisco's OS on it or anything like that.  It will have its faults (as everything in this price range does have), but it does do its core offerings well.

The ERL is a great piece of equipment but even after watching it for a year, it's not exactly the easiest thing to work with, especially with regards to dual wan.  I've watched it very closely because I was very close to using it as our core router (just small business), but even after a year they didn't have configurations that were available to work out of the box.  And then the hardware issue started showing up.

There are plenty of great routers out there if you're willing to 'roll your own' like pfsense, routeros, and the like.  But for something that just works (in most cases) out of the box, it's very hard to find something at this current price.  And of course, if something isn't bought in the CDW outlet, they do continue to decrease the price to a certain point.
