Lubed Switch Fans?
« on: Thu, 17 March 2016, 11:46:40 »
I have not had a chance to test out my first keyboard mod... lubed clears w/ 78g sprits. As many of you probably saw in previous posts of mine, I spent a painful amount of time modifying my first mechanical keyboard only to break the molex connector. My first replacement wire took about 2 weeks to track down and then another 2 getting lost in the mail. A second wire took another week to ship and was supposed to arrive Monday... and disappeared for 5 days in the mail. It looks like it finally reappeared and I hope to have it by tomorrow.

Anyways, how many of you love lubed switches and consider them your end game? What switch do you enjoy lubed the most? I am thinking about modding my Pok3r as well, but keeping the stock springs.

I am looking at other programmable keyboard options... mainly the Planck, Ergo-dox and possibly a HASU HHKB... depending on how I like the Church Tour.

Honesty time:

I performed an experiment on myself when I did the ergo clear mod on my Pok3r.  After lubing about 1/3 of the switches, I stuck them into the plate and then stuck some unlubed switches into the plate also.  I played around with them for a bit, and thought that I could tell that the lubed ones felt a little less scratchy.

Then I thought that maybe I was having some confirmation bias?  So I stopped lubing the switches and randomly mixed the lubed switches with the unlubed.  Guess what?  I failed to be able to discern lubed from unlubed.  I wasn't sad, though, since that saved me the trouble of lubing the rest of my switches  :p

At that point, I went through and found enough lubed switches to use in the stabilized keys and then let the rest fall where they may.  I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't have any trouble with the keys getting stuck in the down position since I was using really light springs (equivalent to MX Browns).

Maybe some of you out there can tell instantly, but when I did a blind test, I couldn't.

What did you lube exactly?

I followed WhiteDragon's guide on youtube (I believe that was his name) and the difference is substantial. It took forever though. I lubed each spring, and every single moving part. Sliders, stems and so on.

I hope it'll be worth it in the end. It only took several months ^ ^.

I lubed the sliders, but not the springs.  I don't really see much point in lubing the springs unless you're trying to keep them from pinging.

It could be that maybe EK's Mechlube isn't up to snuff?  Maybe my batch of Clears just weren't that bad to begin with?  I'm probably never going to do it again on MX switches so I don't really know for sure.

I'm just not a huge MX fan in general.  I only have the Pok3r because it's a way cheaper option for an iPad keyboard than an HHKB.  MX switches are just bottom of the barrel overall in terms of feel to me, but still better than cheapo membranes and not "bad" by any means.

I lubed my HHKBs and I love it. The stock sliders feel just fine, but adding a little lube makes them really smooth and more snappy, in my opinion.

I was finally able to test my Ergo-Clear mod and decided I do not like 78g Springs. So, I desoldered the majority of the board and am swapping stock springs back in... lubed this time.

Lube completely changes the feel of the keys. I'm a huge fan of light actuation and heavy bottoming out force. I tend to slam my keys so having that bit of a barrier between you and the plate is a godsend for my wrists and fingertips.

KUL has pinging issues so aye. I just did it for good measure.
