Reads the magnetic strips on ID badges for quick data entry? Sounds like hell to troubleshoot.

Ah, so it wasn't actually some kind of keyboard. They just called it a "keyboard wedge" because it shared the keyboard's PS/2 line. So it returned character codes, as if someone were typing on the keyboard? Odd. Why wouldn't it have been a serial device?
