What to do with $1 Million dollars?
« on: Sun, 13 December 2009, 13:01:00 »
So, what would you people do if you had $1,000,000 dollars?  I would buy a nice car, buy a bunch of IBM keyboards, and put at least $300,000 in the bank.

Put it in the bank, and spend a lot of time being indecisive over what should be done with it. By the time I've come up with a plan, the money probably will have been lost by the most wonderful banking system of the civilized world...

I'd convert it to gold.
Or €s, at least. That should make for some decent house, a business, some fun stuff and a good bit of change to put in the bank.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

the second part is even better, one of the best parts in the movie

though mostly because of peter's disappointment and facial expression when lawrence simplifies his situation

(since when can you printscreen a movie?  googled how to, to get it from my very own copy, and apparently no one else ever had a problem...)

(and that WOULD be a 1080p blu ray frame, but even the best movie ever made wont be paid for twice)
(but other than principle, i WOULD really want it, they really messed up the DVD release, non-anamorphic, COME ON... looks AWFUL)
(aaaand thinking about all this again makes me wish i had, it was only $10 SHIPPED the other day on amazon...!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I'd imigrate to Japan, and spend every day in Akihabara, and maid cafe's. And get a girl that would wear one of those keyboard bra's for me. lol

Of course I'd have to modify it with mechanical switches. roflol

I would keep my job and invest (conservatively). Compounding interest is a good thing.  I would retire by 40, move to Austin. and spend the rest of my days playing disc golf in the TX Hill Country.

I'm surprised nobody said they'd buy a Topre board... then again you wouldn't have too much left over.

So, can we adjust that $1,000,000 for those of us living in Silicon Valley? That doesn't get you very far around here unless you plunk it down on a trailer rental to get out.

I'd buy the house that we're renting, buy top of the line mobile equivalents of my computing gear, grab my wife along and spend a few months visiting friends who never hear from me because I'm always working... and do my work on the road.

Oh, and I'd punch my own ticket to SXSW so I can heckle the fools on the Das boards... and to enjoy the music.

Stash most of it, and attempt to live off the interest.

Over in fantasy "Blow the lot" land however.

    Dodge Ram SRT10 (Family transport)

Build a new V12 Trike (Fun transport)

See if I can wangle a Supermicro 2P/4P board and some AMD G32's to fill it. Add on a scary RAID50 array (SSD's naturally), and ask Corsair for some of it's finest products to complement. Use Workshop mentioned below to make something to house it.

Workshop with 3phase,containing 400Amp MIG/ARC, TIG inverter, Gas axes, Brakes, Mills and Lathes.

[Peter, Michael, and Samir are chatting as they hang around the printer]
Peter Gibbons: Our high school guidance counselor used to ask us what you'd do if you had a million dollars and you didn't have to work. And invariably what you'd say was supposed to be your career. So, if you wanted to fix old cars then you're supposed to be an auto mechanic.
Samir: So what did you say?
Peter Gibbons: I never had an answer. I guess that's why I'm working at Initech.
Michael Bolton: No, you're working at Initech because that question is b***s*** to begin with. If everyone listened to her, there'd be no janitors, because no one would clean sh** up if they had a million dollars.
Samir: You know what I would do if I had a million dollars? I would invest half of it in low risk mutual funds and then take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities...
Michael Bolton: Samir, you're missing the point. The point of the exercise is that you're supposed to figure out what you would want to do if...
[printer starts beeping]
Michael Bolton: "PC Load Letter"? What the f*** does that mean?

I am, and I still pretty much don't do anything when I am at home, I do all my work in school for the most part.  I should put in a little more effort than I do though.  Any big project than needs to be done at home usually gets handed in at least 1 day late.  I am a very intelligent person, but I am also very lazy and disorganized. The laziness is what hurts me.  Homework=BAD.  Unless I do it in school, then it gets done.  At home, I haven't done any real homework in about 2 weeks.  You know what, I am going to do some homework at home tonight.  World Literature HW and Biology if I have and Bio HW.

had to look that last one up

Quote
The House of the Dead 4 Special is a two-player attraction based on The House of the Dead 4. Players enter an enclosed room, sit down, and buckle up. The game makes use of two 100-inch screens, one in front of the players and another behind, as well as a five-speaker sound system, giving the impression that enemies are attacking from all directions. The seat shakes when zombies attack, and players are blasted with air whenever they take on damage. The seat automatically rotates to face the players towards whichever screen zombies are attacking from. The game also features a new addition of a life bar. As the players are hit the life bar diminishes. If the life bar is reduced to zero the game is over. There are no continues.

What would I do with $1M? I'd have that operation to remove my finger from my lower lip.

Nice topic.

I would:

1) Complete my best keyboard collection with all the available switches.

2) Built a custom future Model M (or F) with golden case, tungsten carbide metal plates, titanium springs, and ivory or porcelain keys.
Ofcourse this  would be the King of the Keyboards for Kings !!!

In no particular order
  • I'd pay off my consumer and personal debt.
  • Buy a dependable automobile.
  • Set up a trust for my children.
  • Fix my front porch
  • Buy maid service (ongoing)
  • buy each of you a keyboard of choice.
I trolled Geekhack and all I got was an eponymous SPOS.

That HHKB Pro HG is incredible.  Overpriced, but very cool nonetheless.  I could see that board being $500 but no more.

But still lacks Win keys. :(

WHAT IS THAT IBM!!?!?!  Looks like it could be on a laptop.

That's exactly right.  It would be unconfigurable... just like everything else they make.

Do you have one of those? What switches does it use? I think a lot of their portable computer keyboards of the late 80s used Alps... I could be wrong though.

I don't have one. Can't find what switches it uses, I presume rubber dome.

Omg, that's awesome, I'm going to ask this seller if it uses clicky switches... Maybe I'll buy one just to rip it apart and rematrix it. roflol

So cool, it's like the perfect keyboard if it uses mechanical switches..

1 million dollars should be enough to get magnetic and buckling beam switches back on the market...
IBM Model F XT + Soarer's USB Converter || Cherry G80-3000/Clears

The storage list:
IBM Model F AT || Cherry G80-3000/Blues || Compaq MX11800 (Cherry brown, bizarre layout) || IBM KB-8923 (model M-style RD) || G81-3010 Hxx || BTC 5100C || G81-3000 Sxx || Atari keyboard (?)

Let us know. I think you could even get them as NIB replacement parts. All the vintage computer collectors fail to give detail. I think wikipedia describes the keyboard as being "criticized." But I'm not sure if it refers to the feel or layout. My guess is rubber dome because if it would use chiclet, it would have been mentioned much more in google like the PcJr keyboard, and if it would use BS, it would also have google hits about that.

I think it used Alps - at least one of IBM's portables of the day did. There's also this thing as well (I dont think this was the one I was thinking about originally) -

There's a little preview of it in this video Link about 15 mins in. The guy showing it off says it has 'the same feel as the PS/2 keyboard', but it sounds suspiciously quiet. However, in some youtube videos I watched of them, the keyboard sounds quite loud.

About ten minutes in, there's a pocket sized PC that has the contacts for the keyboard on the flipside of the motherboard. Impressive stuff!

I would buy up every last remaining IBM space saver, then burn them all. That way, the value of my personal space saver would increase exponentially. It would be worth at least 2 million probably.

Yes, brilliant, I know.

It would also be cool to buy up all the glass/window companies in town, then hire some punk kids to go break everyones windows. Why hasn't anyone ever thought of this before? Man, I'm on a roll.

Also, I would stop eating these so-called "fancy" potato chips and upgrade to extra fancy. Hey, I work for my money. I deserve extra fancy.
