Ergo Computing FMAKB6551 White Alps - Never used! Pics!
« on: Mon, 11 April 2016, 12:55:54 »
Sorry for low quality pics.

It's a lightweight keyboard and it seems pretty nice for what it is. The main problem is the spacebar is rattly and the top of the big-ass enter key is stiff (it would have been better to just have the normal enter and backspace). Other than that, it feels really smooth as far as I can tell. Maybe a tad stiffer than ideal, but I think that's just they way White Alps are from what I have read. I also don't yet have an adapter to test it with my PS/2 port. The switches aren't as loud as I thought they would be. It's a nice subtle click. I'm glad I got it! I'll be preserving it for sure!

Funny, I found one of these the other day too, super clean. Mine aren't complicated white switches though, they're simplified iirc.
Check my keyboard video reviews:

I saw a pic of another version of this board with simplified switches and I really hoped mine had complicated ones, because I had read that it did. I was definitely relieved when I typed on it, because it felt nicer than I had anticipated. I wanted to give it a shot since I had ZERO clicky Alps boards and NIB was hard to resist.

Also, even though this isn't what is considered a high-end Alps board, I actually think the layout, while with a couple of issues, does have certain advantages due to its compact nature. I really can't use full size keyboards anymore very much, and this is a board I could actually use long term since it's compact. The spacebar being a bit to the left could also help when playing games or using graphic design software. I'll have to see.

Hopefully I can test it soon to see how (or if) it performs!

Great find! I've always liked the big-ass enters, I imagine launching missiles every time with that key. Are you a left-thumb spacebar user?

Yeah, I can't remember the last time I used a board with such a huge enter key!

I would like the big-ass enter on this one, but something isn't quite designed well with it, because it's stiff toward the top. You really only want to press it on the bottom/middle part (the area where you'd press a common standard enter key). It's not a huge deal, but that and the rattly space-bar kind of show me how this is more of a budget-minded board.

I mainly use the spacebar with my right thumb, but in games and graphics software I use the left thumb, and in that case, my left thumb is generally right on the edge of a normally placed space bar. Once I actually get a converter to PS/2, I'll be able to see if it actually does work better for that.

I dunno. The more I play with it... it's just that it has something like a plastic plate the switches mount to. It really hurts the feel of the board. Maybe I'll harvest the switches after all as I really like the feel of them. Hmmmm....
