Ergodox Keymap Suggestions?
« on: Thu, 05 May 2016, 01:42:33 »
I got my Infinity Ergodox about a week and a half ago and put it together right away (with Matias Silent Click switches). After playing with it for a few days at home, I took it to work and got down to business. I'm still a bit slower with it than a standard keyboard, but I'm starting to get used to it.

I mapped esc to caps lock, which is probably better than the default position (I'm a vim user, so I need it to get into command mode).

The one thing that's bothering me is that the ortholinear keys mean that the [, ], \, and = keys aren't in the correct positions. I'm a programmer, so I find myself using [] and = a lot. | is occasionally useful.

Where do people map those keys? I want them to be accessible without moving my hands out of their normal positions, so the small keys on the thumb cluster are pretty much out (as are the big keys inside of the alpha keys). I suppose I could do the bottom row on the left. I could also put them on a different layer, but that seems like a bad idea.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure there's an easy answer for you.  To me the biggest problem with figuring out an ErgoDox layout was how to deal with the top right hand corner.  On a normal ANSI keyboard you have 9 keys to the right of the 0P:? column, while there's only 4 keys on the Ergodox.  Something has to give, but that could be very different depending on your usage.  Someone who programs may want a different layout than say someone who's a typist or someone who's working with spreadsheets a lot.

Personally I'd prefer to have the = key closer to normal, but due to lack of options, I have it mapped to the left hand, top right 1u key.  As I don't program, the [] are pretty useless to me except maybe as a special character in a password.  I have them mapped to the left hand vertical 1.5u keys, although that was more of a key cap constraint as Granite only offers a couple choices in vertical 1.5u legend keycaps.

Take a look at this thread.  You may find some ideas in there.

Maybe someone will build an ergodox clone with another 1 or 2 rows on the right side. I think you could get away with just making the right keys 1U, except maybe the shift, which could become 2U. That would only expand the footprint a tiny bit and give you back pretty much all of those keys.
