Octagon V2 Metal Insert Interest Check

136643-0

Background Info
This interest check was first alluded to in the Octagon V2 Group Buy. I didn't want to hijack elton's thread so here is a different thread, in the form of an interest check. This was initiated by duckness who is in Singapore, and due to the weight of this, it seemed more cost efficient to have it manufactured locally. I decided to take it upon myself to look for local CNC fab houses to make this for me. I did not create the file, this is a file direct from duck0113.

Octagon V2 Group Buy: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78549.800 - The Group Buy is currently closed, this is an offshoot project based on it.

Who Is This For
This is for people who have a Octagon V2 or who will be getting one, and want a little more weight. As mentioned previously, I'm getting this done locally, and therefore will also ship locally (CONUS) as a priority. Of course if I get enough of an interest check for people outside the US I'll try my best to make things work. Be prepared to spend more than us US folk though. I also live close to the Canadian border and make frequent trips up. Canada buyers will be in luck =).

Who Am I?
I've been an avid geekhack member located in the United States. This will actually be my first organized buy. I have a fair number of trades under my belt and haven't had anyone complain about my business practices. =). As I'm fairly new to this, I hope people will be patient with me and for those more experienced, please don't hesitate to give me pointers if you see me going towards a wrong direction.

Plans
I am currently in round 2 of the Octagon V2, so I don't actually have an Octagon yet. But soon!

I am currently in talks with a local CNC miller. I won't be opening an actual GB until I get my Octagon and that I can confirm that the initial runs actually do fit. Interest check below is to narrow down our choices.

I will be purchasing extra units for late stragglers, but that will come at a cost.

The old form has been closed, this is a new form to narrow down choices and final cost

http://goo.gl/forms/c59kAxdjSomYJfwo2

Estimated Costs/Time/Weight

Ballpark estimate for 40 of these plates seems to be around $35 each. If a significant number of blank plates are ordered, those will drop down to ballpark estimate of $30 each. As of 5/11/16 7 am, we have a little over 30 individuals interested. Your total price will be that + paypal fees + whatever shipping it takes to get to you. I'll order a few more for spares and selling to late stragglers for $$$$$$.

From everyone paying (End of GB) to units getting to me is an estimated 2-3 weeks. CONUS buyers will probably receive their package a week after that depending on how fast I can do this. Priority shipping of a medium flat rate box is $13 and will get to you 2-3 days. First class will be cheaper, slower, and will probably use that for most single orders. International buyers....I have no clue. Currently in talks with other members of the community regarding if I'm going to provide that service or not.  Canada buyers will probably be the next week after CONUS.

Estimated weight is that each of these plates will add roughly a pound/450g.

Prototype Pictures:
Prototype is cut from scrap aluminum so the finishing and quality is not what to expect. This was made for test fitting purposes, which is happening next Monday/Tuesday

138524-1138526-2
138528-3138530-4

139122-5139124-6

Weight: 4.5 oz/127.5 g

Payment

Payment will be handled via PayPal. Why? Because if I run off with all your money, you have 180 days to get it all back. Of course that means PayPal fees, but I think it will be worth it. An invoice will be sent out to participating Group Buy members.

If for some reason you are unable to pay, well, too bad. Just kidding. Send me a PM and we can work something out. Case by case basis of course.

Along with Brass and Stainless Steel, perhaps you should consider Copper.

I hand cut a plate for my Orion v2 and it worked out very nicely! It's heavier than Brass and has a very nice appearance if you ask me.

Doh, I'd love this but I didn't get the aluminum bottom

If I ever am able to acquire a spare, then count me in :]

Question though: Would I need to mod the aluminum bottom to insert the plate?

On an Orion V2? Fat chance! =P

No, but actually doing that would require one hell of a stencil and a very VERY steady hand. Actually, I think there are non-powered hand engraving tools that could do the job, but I would still need a stencil. I'd probably paint the stencil on first then carve the letters out. Obviously, it'd be one crazy act of dedication. I just wanted it for weight, really! :)

Hey, maybe you should open up the orders to Orion v2 users like us; I know a lot of us in the Orion v2 GB (some cross over between the two GBs as well!) would love to have weights for our boards.

It might help with MQO, no?  I would order one, especially if you could get them done in copper, haha.  :thumb:

If someone could provide me a design file, I'll see what I can do.

But I'm very unwilling to open a group buy unless I can test fit these things. I'm hoping that if it takes too long for Round 2 to get to me, I can find someone with an Octagon V2 locally.

Submitted!

How about a material selection for those who don't care and just want the cheapest? Both brass and STS are nice to me, I just want the extra weight.

This is what I found on duck's site. Not sure if it'd help.

Yeah, seeing more materials would be cool. I'm still in for copper. It wasn't too expensive to buy myself a plate and do it myself. :thumb:

More materials? Sure why not, it's an interest check. Let's see what happens. My main concern is that to keep things simple, I'll probably pick the most popular one or two. If it gets too complicated, prices might be higher for everyone else. Plus this is my first GB and want to keep it straightforward so people will actually be at ease with handing me their money.

Copper inserts would be of the highest interest to anyone with a board as nice as an Octagon V2, save expensive metals. As the board ages, the copper will turn green as it oxidizes, which I think would be a nice aesthetic. Also, if possible, could you provide us with some different font options?

Cheers

I'll add Copper to the list. Font Options aren't gonna be changeable unless I can get Duck to do it for me, or someone equally talented haha. The last time I did CAD work was a decade ago.

For someone ignorant like myself, can you please enlighten me as to what the purpose of the brass plate is? Is it just to add more weight to an already heavy board?

Will there be a concern about galvanic corrosion between copper and aluminum? Even with the anodizing, one scratch would expose a point where corrosion could occur. I highly disagree with the look of copper patina alongside anodized aluminum.

I'd also be interested in getting an Orion v2 weight as well :thumb:

I'm not an expert on corrosion, but a cursory google search leads me to believe that there needs to be water or another ionic solution in contact with the two metals in order for efficient corrosion, which means our dry boards should be fine.

Well, considering that the relief for your Orion v1 bottom and the one on mine seem identical, I think an Orion V2 weight should fit in both of them!

Before people get too excited about Orion V1/V2 weights, I'm gonna state for the record that this will ONLY be for the Octagon V2 (If it fits for the Octagon V1 then yay!).

Depending on how well I run this, customer feedback from you guys, and me being able to test fit, I'll work on getting something for the Orion.

I was thinking of having an acrylic "weight" lasercut to see if it fits. Just hadn't looked for the file yet.
And I forgot I made that picture. :))

For those that want the even more exotic weightless weights, let's go for carbon fiber!

I'm kidding. :P

A novelty plate made for the relief with something etched or engraved into it would be pretty cool, weight or not. :P

Can anyone explain to me the differences between having a brass/stainless steel/copper insert in terms of keyboard usefulness? I'm assuming that its not plated with that material and that it is fully 100% that material which would lead to different densities and weight, and also aesthetics right?

But if anyone has any insight on why one may be more preferred over the other I'd appreciate it, thanks!

It's mainly for weight, but certain materials look better to certain people. =). I regret that I cannot offer depleted uranium as an option.

Brass: 0.308
Copper: 0.323
Iron: 0.284

Brass and copper are a bit heavier than stainless steel, but they corrode easier. Whereas stainless obviously does not corrode. Picking one over the other depends purely on personal preference only.

Brass and copper are a bit heavier than stainless steel, but they corrode easier. Whereas stainless obviously does not corrode. Picking one over the other depends purely on personal preference only.

Ah okay thanks. I guess you wouldn't be able to see it really within the case anyways, anyone know the stock weight of an octagon with full alu body? Not sure if I need something that hefty haha.

Already submitted. Due to the high stability of stainless steel, I prefer using it than brass and copper but I still love the color of brass and copper. Anyway, what would be the price if the GB actually made it?  :)

We now have an estimated cost and time. I have updated the original post to reflect this. Please remember these are estimated costs.

$30-35 each, with ~$8 shipping? That's not bad for a well-finished plate. Too bad the price break isn't that great for quantities like this.

Fantastic price, really. It cost me like $24 to buy the copper plate I hand cut, haha. Well, with shipping, it's almost double, but still, for a well-finished, machined plate? Yeah, can't beat that.

If these ever open up for the Orion V2, I'll buy one!

At $30 with engraving it's going to be less expensive than any other option I have to me, unless shipping US->AU costs more than $90 (which I know it won't :D )

Don't forget that's also MADE IN AMERICA!

Where did the $8 CONUS shipping figure come from? Is that what it costs to send 1 lb with the plate dimensions through USPS?

I think my biggest reservation about shipping international is the customs forms/fees and the bigger risk of damage to the items. Maybe someone familiar with the customs process can shoot me a PM to alleviate my fears? This would also be my first Group Buy and unsure if that's something a novice like me should handle.

This is the customs process:

1. fill in the form (your address, their address, declaration (you literally write 4 fields: item description, weight, cost, signature)

2. send it

I wish I was kidding but that's how simple it is.

Just a guess. Small flat rate is $6 and first class caps at 16oz and isn't much cheaper. After fees it'll be close.

Intl shipping if you pay postage online is really easy, it prints out the forms for you. If you ship small flat rate intl you don't even need a customs envelope, just a regular label like you usually do. If you're not already doing it, paypal.com/shipnow has better shipping rates than USPS does.

NEW UPDATE - Original Post amended

The original goal was to do manufacturing in two different places to make cost of shipping cheaper for everyone all around. Unfortunately, I received news this morning that my collaborator in Asia will not be able to manufacture these plates.

This means that I am the only one making these plates. Due to this, I think it would be in everyone's best interest if I sell these internationally as well. There is already a limited number of Octagon V2s out there, so I'm not going to be swamped with orders. As promised before, CONUS and Canada will go out first as I am most familiar with those.

Due to encouragement and pleas from several members, I am more comfortable with international shipping, but this will be my first time. So please bare with me. I might send one international order out along with the CONUS ones as a test. I'll talk more about this in a future post.

I have been informed that in some cases, after payment of invoices, the funds in my paypal account may be held for some amount of time.

Does anyone know what the amount is, and how long it will be held for? Currently there are 40 people in the IC, so I can't imagine having more than $1600-2000 paid to me total.

Have everyone send you paypal F&F directly. Avoid invoicing & charging for goods and services -- it saves us all money that just ends up in Paypal's coffers. Sometimes they'll hold large payments back so they can verify that it was legitimate, but that takes just a day or so, and shouldn't apply to $30-40.

Alright more questions for those more knowledgeable than me

1. Is the design supposed to be relieved, or engraved/traced? Is there a specific depth?
2. What size and style screws are being used so we can make an accurate countersink?

Just FYI, the Octagon V2 Kit already provides (stainless)screws for the weight. Hex screw, 6mm head diameter, 6mm total length, and I think M2.5

I'll count tomorrow, but the acrylic flat bottom I believe requires 8 small screws. The plate also requires 8. Total small screws I have is 17 then, leaving one extra for assembly. I'm using both the flat top and rounded top small screws at various points, since otherwise I would not have enough. Are we supposed to supply our own screws for any part of the assembly?

that makes sense, for the aluminum bottom you can use the longer screws for the top parts of the case. since one would not need the flat head screws for a weight with the acrylic case, it would instead be used for the case itself.

Thanks guys, I'll see if I can buy a whole bunch of screws and add it to everyone's orders. May add a bit to the cost, and that's depending if I can find them.

In the meantime, I've ordered a prototype plate for test fitting =). We'll see how this turns out. Problem I have right now is that I don't have an Octagon. I've reached out to Elton to see if I could get my order expedited. I am #2 for batch 2, so I do expect to be one of the early ones anyway.

I frequently travel to Oregon, but I believe the next time I head down, I'll already have an Octagon V2 haha.

Custom engraving is do-able, however it may have some drawbacks such as much higher price for you, delays for everyone, and other complications. If you want custom engraving, I would probably just order a blank plate and take it to a local shop to have it done there.

I still do not have an Octagon V2, though conversations with Elton have revealed that Octagon V2 is "shipping very soon". My attempt to get my order shipped first (I'm #2 in batch 2) didn't pan out.

I've maintained that I will not start the GB until I have verified that this works. So if anyone is in the Pacific Northwest and has an Octagon V2, I'd love to meet up with you to get this GB on the way.

UPDATE:

1. Prototype is in the mail and on the way to me
2. A member of the community reached out and volunteered both his time, and his Octagon V2 for test fitting. In lieu of batch 2 arriving, I will be using his Octagon for tests and photos.
3. Final Cost Discussion: Some options have to go to stay within my original $30 - $35 estimate. With all options in the IC, expect an addition $5ish to $10ish added. Basically with a production this small, with this much variance, prices are going to be a lot higher. I'd like to reduce variance.

Final Cost Discussion:

1. Material: Brass is the leading material of choice, followed by stainless steel, and then copper. One of these has to go. Based on survey results alone, I would say copper has to go
2. Finish: Finish is split down the middle between brushed or polish. This can be cheaper if we get it in the raw finish and finish it ourselves, or say something like All plates of material A will come in polished, and all plates in material B will come in brushed.
3. Design: Overwhelming amount of people want just the Octagon V2 Logo with a few wanting a blank plate, and even fewer want the design with duck0113 on it. I'll remove the duck0113 to reduce variance. Poor duck, no one wants to immortalize him in their keyboards.

Please discuss

- Brass + Stainless Steel. (Though it is my personal opinion brass is nicer)

- I believe brushed is something like hairline finish, and polished is shiny mirror like finish. I don't think it's possible to manually do this by hand to achieve the finish you want. I may be wrong. Also, to me, brushed feels more robust than a scratch-able shiny surface.

- I'll go with the majority, whichever makes it easier for the design : D

I think a polished finish will make a nicer contrast to the anodised texture of the case.

Will depend on how much you order. If it's just one plate, I'll send it through first class and should get to you in a few days. If it's two plates, probably flat rate priority

The prototype was made out of scrap aluminum so finishing and texture is not what to expect. This was made primarily for test fitting purposes which should happen next week. I will be updating the photos again after that.

It weighs in at 4.5 oz/127.5g

Mirror Mirror in my Octagon V2, who has the fairest keyboard of them all?

It is my understanding that the finishing is all done via machine. However he didn't have any brass or stainless samples to machine this out of. To make one of each variation for prototyping purposes would cost probably $200+ on my end. Which I would then gladly add on to the cost of the group buy lol.

Perhaps if I were to run an Orion plate GB, I could start a raffle to build funds for the prototype and have some unique engraving on them. (Orion constellation or something) The winners of the raffle would then receive the prototypes along with their actual unit during the GB process. Being a prototype though, they should understand that it may not fit lol. Ideas for the future =). FYI, ever since E3E mentioned it, I am deeply considering doing it for the Orion but won't take any action at least until this GB order has arrived at my front door.

Looks good. I understand this does not reflect the final finish, but I was expecting a mirror finish on the final product but to be honest I would be okay with a brushed or blasted (not machined) finish too.

Looks good, I would be ok with either mirror or brushed finish.
Hopefully you will ship internationally in the end.

I will be shipping international, it will just be the last shipment I'll do. I'm currently conducting my first international sale in classifieds. Couple hoops to jump through but I think I can do it without any let downs on either end.

Meanwhile, it's been about a week since I opened the first IC. From the looks of it

1. While a large number of people voted for ONLY having brass (over 50%), I feel I should still offer the stainless steel option. Copper is out.
2. Polished finish won out by huge margins no matter what material was chosen. As finishing is considered an additional stage of work, having it be only one option will simplify the process.

Is the OCTAGON V2 text going to be optional? I thought I saw this option in one of the polls. If not, does the direction of mounting matter? For example, could I flip it over and have an unmarked surface?

Thanks again for spearheading this, I'll be in either way.

Yes blank plates are still an option, I only put out the results of the most result poll which was targeted towards plate material and finish.

Due to the holes being counter-sunk, you will not have the option to flip the plate around to get a blank plate. Please keep in mind that they only way you will see this plate is if you open up your keyboard. The design is merely for those who want it all. LOL.

I don't have mine yet so totally didn't realize this is actually on the inside of the case. Definitely not as important, although it'd be kind of fun to do something silly with it like engrave a fake treasure map on it. You know, for the people who just like to see cash burn.

I didn't specify elsewhere, but I'll be in for two of these.

Well, I guess you could flip the plates, but you'd just have to find/use pan head screws instead of the cone-shaped ones meant for countersunk mounting. :P It's not too bad of a compromise, but if you just want a blank plate anyway, might as well just buy that.

FYI, ever since E3E mentioned it, I am deeply considering doing it for the Orion but won't take any action at least until this GB order has arrived at my front door.

Oh, this is fantastic to hear. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for any advances on this after this GB gets to that stage. :D

Well..... making the plates are all going to be the same process. Even the ones with Octagon V2 engraved will have to start off as a blank plate to begin with. That's the reason why a blank plate will be cheaper as no further action is required to mark them complete. (Not much cheaper, but cheaper).

Custom design would be cool, however it would probably delay the manufacturing time for everyone. I suggest if you want a custom design, just order a blank plate and find a local engraver in your area to do the work for you.

You have given me one more thing to check for during the test fit on Monday. I'll bring pan head screws if I can find them lol.

If it fits, you must not acquit start the group buy!

Special thanks to Pemdas for driving up from Vancouver to Seattle with his Octagon V2. Weight fits perfectly and the screws are flush. We put the keyboard together with the weight in and there were no shorts! Pictures will be up tonight. Unfortunately reversing the plate doesn't let you use the blank side, this is because the screws will not sit flush enough and may potentially short or damage your PCB. The only way it would work is if you superglue the plate on....but that defeats the purpose of it being reversible lol.

With that last issue taken care of, I will begin the process to start up the Group Buy, should be up in a day or so.

As discussed previously

Material: Brass or Stainless Steel
Engraving: Yes/No
Finish: All polished

All I did was create a new post in the GB section last night. Did I have to contact a moderator or something along with that?

that will help speed the process along. idk what the policy is, but i find that contacting a global mod is the most useful you should be able to find a list of them here:
