Hello from Pittsburgh, PA
« on: Sat, 04 June 2016, 09:34:49 »
Hey guys just came across this site in a furious search for custom keycaps for my MK Disco. Not only did this site provide me with a few places to get customs/artisans it also provided me with more info on mechs & their different parts than anywhere else I have come across. I was sold on geekhack after that & decided to join!  ;D Looking forward to talking with guys about this crazy mech kb addiction (at least that's what my friends call it!  :)) ) I have acquired.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Sounds like you need to convert a few of your friends ;)

Be aware that most keycap sets are not backlight friendly - i.e. they will not let the backlights shine through the legends on the keycaps.  If they keycaps are sufficiently thick you can get some nice underglow!

There are a few aftermarket sets available that are backlight friendly, but they tend to be just plain black or white, and not much different from what you have now.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

LOL, Thanks for the welcome! Yeah I realized that as I was searching for new keycaps, I originally wanted PBT red & black keys with translucent legends on the top but could only find black PBT keys like that. So I ended up going with the red ABS set for the Ducky Shine 3 since they have translucent legends & are the same as the black keys that came with my Disco. I figure I can mix & match them to get the red/black color scheme I want with a few customs thrown in.

I'll save getting the PBT caps for when I build my own board, that is one of the next projects I have in mind.  :thumb:

The profile on those two sets is probably close enough to OEM that you wouldn't notice the difference.

I've mixed a few sets here and there, mostly Cherry profile sets though.

Close but no cigar with the Shine 3 caps. The stock ones that come with the disco sit a little lower & have much more rounded corners unfortunately. I tried leaving the stock caps on just the letter keys but the Ducky caps have a significantly different feel to them that felt better to me so I just put the whole red set on. Since the case is black it does still match what I wanted for the most part.  ;D

You can sometimes be lucky mixing keycap sets, sometimes not.

Glad you found something that works for you :)
