[IC]Revo & Dr.D Sandwich TKL keyboard
« on: Fri, 22 July 2016, 08:18:23 »
Hi,everyone:
I am Raymond from Revo Design. Today i am gonna show you our lastest custom Tenkeyless keyboard.

This is a Custom keyboard designed by keyboard enthusiast Dr.D and produced by Revo Design.

Less is more. That’s what Dr.D wants for his keyboard. After using other sandwich keyboards,he want to do something different. With no metal mat on the bottom, this keyboard weights over 2 kg. You will feel like typing on something that can not be moved.
Simple, elegant, something you will love for a long time. That’s how i feel about this board, and i hope you guys can enjoy it as well.

Let’s see some pictures of the sample we made:

143116-0
143118-1
143120-2

Features:
Aluminum 6063t
CNC made cases
Anode
7 degree slope
Ansi and Iso
Fully programmable
Full LED backlighting

The kit will include:
Upper case(wk or wkl)
Middle case
Lower case
Plate
PCB
Logo D(made of alu and anode)
Screws and rubber mat

Color option: black,silver,red,blue,gray,pink

Price: Around $260 usd (shipping and fees not included)

GB time: I am hoping we can run this one really quick.
This will run on EC and GH at the same time.

To be determined:

Shipping cost.

Payment method(I really don't know much about this,if anyone can help with that, please let me know. That will be much appreciated!)

So what do you think, guys? leave a message or PM me,i'll get back to you as soon as i saw them

Thank you.

I see you all interested in the Logo D.....For people who don't like it, i'll make a version of no logo on the top.

Update: The D is inspired by Initial D. About the PCB,we use a M87. It's programmable via bootmapper. The middle layer is made of anodized alu,so you can chose from the color we provided.
I prefer with no back lighting on the PCB. They only look good in the pictures.

Here is a color sampe:
143161-3

More pictures of the design:
143234-4
143236-5
143238-6

Currently,we are making another sample.I'll post more pictures later on.

One with logo or without logo(PS):
143417-7

Updates:
145151-8
145131-9
145133-10
145135-11
145137-12
145139-13
145141-14
145143-15
145145-16
145147-17

Maybe another kind of plate?
145149-18
final update:
146229-19

After some test. We decided to make the cable fixed on the pcb using xh2.54 port. In that case i will give a free cable like the picture(normal usb,not the yarbo ps2. you can get yarbo +$10).The cable will be handmade,so that are pretty good.
I will start the groupbuy this saturday. Thank you for your patience, everyone. cheers.

Interested.

That said, ...
if at least the "D" didn't stand out like that - I could live with the D in (top-) case colour.

You can chose any color for that D. That  "D" is anode alu.

I can do a version of no logo...

Love it!

How is the black inside the D achieved? Is it an insert, or is it painted?

It's insert. It's made of alu. so you can chose the color of the D.

If people hate that D,I'll remove it. If people love it, i will give two D in one set.

Photekq loves the D.   :D

I don't hate it, it's just a little big and the color you chose for the sample makes it stand out too much.  It would be cool to have something in that spot, just make it a little smaller or a little more subtle (at least for the sample photos).

Acrylic middle plate option? Underlighting?

I'm a fan of the D since it reminds me of Initial D :)

It being an insert allowing diff colors is very appealing as well.

Possible to get a half plate?

That was my first reaction to that one too haha.

I think the best way to deal with the "D or no D" controversy that is beginning to form here is to just produce D-stickers or something like that, that way every user can decide on wether or not they want the D.

I'm in the, not a huge fan of the d club. However if it were more subtle (black on black for example) it might be easier on the eye. Also want to know more about the pcb and lighting options.

Please consider a golden middle plate for extra bling.

A Brilliant but subtle design, we need more stuff like this.

Also noted it doesn't appear to have any RGB Lights - LOVE you to BITS.

About time some sane, grown up person decided to release a rather nice design before the masses, without cramming it full of Led Diarrhea, thanks for doing it  :thumb: .

When you decide to inform us on the full costings and of course receiving it all through Paypal, then we might  have a real keyboard to look forward to BUT if handling Paypal directly seems quite inappropriate to you, then we all could go through MassDrop which loves dealing with customized Keyboard purchases.  Let them handle all the payments and distribution of your product.

Thank you,my friend. Those are lovely comment. I am so happy to see someone like the design.
Dr.D wants to do IC here and see if people like this keyboard, anyway rest assured i'll make this happen either way.

Interesting less is more mentality but having 5 case parts really contradicts that for some reason. However, it is rather pretty in the right colors I imagine.

Yep,color matters. I don't know how to do renders, otherwise you will see a much more beautiful board.
I think the design is pretty simple. Cause for a sandwich keyboard, you always need that many parts.
There is one version without the logo D.that one is simple enough, right?my friend.Hope you can like it :D

It's not hard to do that.
We used to have a weight designed in the bottom, but after the sample made we remove it. It's already very heavy.
I don't think we need to add a metal weight, what do you say?

It's a match. Are you making your own PCB? That's so cool.
Yes I am :thumb: Originally for the mech27-tkl, but since it matches I might join this GB too!
I also made a 60% PCB in the past.

Awesome. May i ask why you have to make your own PCB. Will your PCB have some cool functions?like RGB lighting or something?
Anyway, i am thinking about to have another kind of plate made. Maybe you can still have some use of the pcb.
Hope you have a good weekend! :D :D :D

It's mostly for fun :thumb: I can pick the MCU used, and therefore run my own firmware (https://github.com/jgouly/keyboard-firmware)
Since the Mech27-TKL will most likely come with a middle layer diffuser, I'll probably look at adding some RGB under-lighting. Again, most for the "challenge" of the PCB design/firmware.

can't the middle colored case be cut in the same dimensions than the other parts? (I think it would look better than being larger)

I wouldn't change that at the moment. If i cut the middle case the same dimensions as the other case, then i don't think there will be a need for the middle case. That could be totally redesign.
And trust me it looks better this way. :thumb:

Most of these comments seem to want it to be something generic like most TKLs. I love the way this looks, D and all! Can't wait to join.

It helps that my name starts with a D

I really don't get this though. I mean there are sooooo many generic TKLs which more or less look the same and have the same features.
I like this idea since it's a nice and most of all different approach. I'm still not a fan of the TKL layout though.

I like the middle piece style and I think others do too. It's just the 'D' logo some people don't like.

But, if I understood the start post right, the D is just an optional logo and not a part of the case. It's really complaining about nothing at this moment. It's like "the PCB has LED support but I don't even use those... badly designed product".
I think branding, to some point at least, is very important. If you look at the currently available TKLs you quickly realize why that is the case: They all look alike. Even if the logo would be forced for some reason, I don't really see a problem with it as long as you can choose the color of it. A nice grey to grey contrast (or going for no contrast at all) can really change the looks of it and will take away the flashyness, if that's what you prefer.

Will the PCB fit switches upside down, like most backlit boards? If so, can this be discussed? I dont think anybody will use translucent keycaps anyway, and fitting the switches on the right position will grant better compatibility with cherry profile caps.

It looks like the switches will be mounted with the LEDs on the bottom of the switch

Keeping some money in reserve for this.  I'm thinking the D logo will look great in the same color as the main case body.  If it's a raised letter it will stand out just enough to be recognizable but not so much that it's distracting.

I'm unsure of the colour I want too!

Thinking:
Black, pink middle (like the sample)
Black, grey middle (subtle)
Grey, black middle (also subtle)
Silver, grey middle
grey, silver middle

So many options.

got updates. more picture. up up up
Thanks! Gives us a better idea of the colour options.

I'm also interested in half plate.
some people suggest me to do PC plate. i can do that, but moq is 10. so i am not sure if we can get that done :thumb:
I'm also interested in PC plate. 10 people doesn't seem terribly high!

The plates don't support switch opening, right?
no it doesn't support switch opening.  about the PC plate, i'll see what i can do about that. i'll try to lower the moq,but i dont think i can do that.

I think me and alienman82 want a PC plate in addition to the alu plate.

(In a PM it seemed RevoTeam thought I meant that I wanted to replace the Alu with a PC plate)

I would get both plates if it mean the PC will happen.

If it is a 5mm polycarb plate with stabilizer cutouts on the underside I would also be interested in a PC and alum plate. But if its a 1.5mm PC plate that will be pretty flimsy.

5mm polycarb plate would likely need to have some bits CNC'd to 1.5mm, which would probably make that a weak stress point.

Look at how the plate mounts to the middle piece:

Did I read that this was both Winkey and Winkeyless?  It looks like the plate and PCB support both layouts, but all the renders show Winkelyess.  Are the blockers optional in the top case?

Trade off I guess, flimsy plate or plate with weak points... actually dont think I would want a PC plate after you pointing that out.

I think the PC plate should be a 1.5mm~~ (not 5mm) partial plate.  This is to allow for the PCB switch feel while allowing the mods stability.

You cant just have your PCB hanging off a 1.5mm PC plate with an air-gap, especially a partial plate. Its not strong enough.

Theres a reason why WKL and GON have another layer between the 1.5mm plate and the PCB..

I assembled an octagon with just a 1.5mm polycarb full plate.
I agree with the other layer thing though, was planning to make one of those actually.

5mm acrylic/PC plate would be a dream. I have a SPRiT one and the sounds from that board are so much better than those from my boards with metal plates.

Guys, it will be a 1.5mm pc plate. Because it have to be the same thickness with the alu plate. Or just make something in between the plate and pcb.
The cost will be 15 usd. moq still 10.

if it's a 60% i can do 5mm no problem. but 80% have to mounted the plate on the upper case or the lower case(middle case in this keyboard). in that case i cant do 5mm.

Or do you think a USB connector could still fit in that hole, if I make the PCB myself?

It means you can ALWAYS hook up your keyboard no matter what.

I HATE when a new keyboard design presents itself without a cable attached then tells me I have to spend MORE money to buy it, so that the damn keyboard would work, sux to the extreme.

When I lay down my money I want the keyboard ALL there, ready to be connected to any PC for work.  Also I've seen keyboards with failed usb micro/mini ports, so for all intensive purposes that keyboard becomes dead to everyone unless someone re-solders a brand new usb connector to it  >:( .

For once it's time to finally make a keyboard with a usb cable attached to it, I'm no idiot wireless fanatic and will never be one BUT I want this keyboard with an inbuilt cable ready to be used immediately when it arrives at my address.

it also means you lose the customizability aspect, which sorta goes against the idea of a custom keyboard. so i can understand why it would be a dealbreaker to some

the reason why we  change it to fixed cable is after the test we find out  the mini usb cant fit all the cables. some cable  will  not be working well. it  may caused disconnection sometimes. if we  widen the usb port  it  will be very ulgy...so we give everyone a free  cable. yabro port have to  charge another 10bucks is because the cost of  it is expensive otherwise  we will  be losing  money. its hard to  please everyone but i  am trying here . thanks for every comment. cheers

tbh its not against the custom its  just  harder  to do  it. people  make  great cables for otd keyboards. same case here. anyway you can solder the cable on the pcb as well. just you have fix the cable on the pcb

Also don't forget for some wanting to use their keyboard EVERYWHERE means that they are more prone to having a faulty usb connection involving fitting and removing the cable multiple times.

So you have to decide what will work long term, a removable cable prone to eventual failure or a permanent connection that lasts longer?  Can see why Real Force/Filco and some other manufacturers went with a permanent cable attached due to the same circumstances faced with their usage.

If so, I don't really mind the fixed cable. I just want compatibility with other custom PCBs, in case I accidentally mess up the original

not the same. you can buy extra pcb. the pcb wont be  broken easily. even if you broke it somehow i can always repair it for you or  sell you  a new one.
