PURCHASE HERE

It's finally here after long months of organising, fine-tuning and negotiating!

Q-Series is a profile never reliably available to the community before. Produced for UKKeycaps/MechSupply by Devlin in the UK! Thick, high quality keycaps. This is not a group-buy you're gonna want to miss.

Interesting stuff. Might have to pick up a set to test the profile out :thumb:

First off, thank you very much for making this set available!

That being said, let's start off with some questions for a potential FAQ page.  :p

Regarding the space bar:

How does the texture differ between Devlin and DSA?

Is the space bar ABS or PBT?

Did you consider Signature Plastics G20 series caps for the space bar and why or why not?
[ie: If someone loves G20 would its space bar be a good fit for the Devlin profile?]

What Signature Plastics color code are you using?

Num-Pad & Non-Standard

Did you consider a 1.25 Func or FN key?  I only ask because almost every keyboard has one.

Otherwise congrats on keeping this down to two options!  :p

Based on what they said from the GB page, they use the DSA spacebar, i assume the hight should be similar. The difference i can tell is the finish of the surface and their keys are significant thicker.

It seems the height is not exactly similar. Here you can find some detailed comparison

I know the Q-series is shorter and flatter than DSA caps.
How about K-series and SA? Aside from wall thickness, is there a difference b/w the two profiles?

There we go, thats the kind of keyboard science we're looking for.  ;)

They make those K-Series keys really thick. Definitely some short DSA-like keys. Those stems kinda scare me though. Last thing I want is broken stems. :/

Skidata & Rad-Away Group-Buy Update
Thank you all for making the first Devlin keyset group-buys a success!

Before giving an update on the status of the group-buy I first would like to offer my apologies for the lack of communication over the last 3 weeks, The Christmas and New Year break was a turbulent time for the future of UKKeycaps and MechSupply and the business is now starting to recover.

Unfortunately, due to these internal pressures and external delays (Devlin & Signature Plastics) the estimated shipping date has been delayed by 6 weeks to the 21st of February. This shipping date is an estimate and is not guaranteed (such is the nature of group-buys!) and I offer my apologies for this delay.

Additionally Devlin has let me know of some issues during the manufacturer of the keycaps to the original design, unfortunately after the order was placed. The K-Series Rad-Away Planck keyset will NOT have homing bumps, according to Devlin this is due to a lack of tooling, simply meaning they do not have the mould to create these keys. The keyset will be supplied in full, however the F and J key will not have homing bumps.

Devlin have also informed me that they do not have the moulds for 2.25u and 2.75u keycaps in Q-Series, and instead these keycaps will be produced in QS-Series for the Skidata set. QS-Series is essentially Q-Series but with a slightly profiled bottom edge. Therefore this change will make only a slight visual change to the keyset and no functional change. An image of the two profiles is shown below - the QS key is on the left and in use the raised profiled edge is on the bottom of the keycap. Please note the Q-Series Skidata set WILL have homing bumps.

Taking into account these changes and the delay, if any customer would like a full refund you can reply to this email requesting so. You can also do so via the contact form on the website at anytime. Apologies again for any inconvinience.

Risks of doing a thing for the first time, I guess. Part of the calculation I took in to account when joining the group buy.

I am still looking forward in seeing how this set turns out, quirks and all. :-)

Changing Q-Series to QS-Series profiles is "only a slight visual change" and "no functional change"?

...Are you sure about that?

When I first read about Q profile I was super excited; so much so that I didn't care what color way they went with and was ready to buy multiple sets on day 1.  And then it was revealed it would use a DSA space bar instead and that had me going back and forth.  Just before the GB ended I purchased 1 set.

Now this happens... I mean 1st world problems right?  But people shouldn't shell out over a hundred dollars on something they are not in love with.

HOWEVER to be more positive I do have a suggestion.  Is it too late to add a "Minivan/40% rescue pack"?  The non-standard kit could use a couple of blank enter keys amongst other things.  I am NOT a Minivan/40% layout expert but maybe someone here is and can suggest additional keys.

I don't know how much of a logistical nightmare this would be and who will be footing the bill.  If Devlin dropped the ball maybe they will add them and/or give a discount.

This would at least build a mini board using ALL Q series profile keycaps.

UKKeycaps what do you think?

A planck set or a Ergodox set would also be possible, BUT even if the planck or the Ergodox has some users, it's just a tiny minority. I guess it's even more worse with the minivan.

(Attachment Link)

...Are you sure about that?

That image was included in the email sent to all customers, so it's not like it's a secret.

Devlin informed me of these changes after the order was placed, I am not too thrilled with it either, but people will over-play how much this will effect the aesthetics of the keyset.

I'll say again - if anyone you like a refund do not hesitate to contact via the webpage!

EDIT: In terms of the posts regarding other layouts, it is too late to consider for this group-buy. Future group-buys will support more layouts.

It only effects the shift keys.  The ISO enter is another profile; ANSI enter should still be Q.

Isn't the ANSI enter 2.25u?

You're right. In ANSI both shift keys and the enter key are affected, in ISO only the right shift key.

This is hard. Basically I don't know if it is going to look and/or feel strange with those different profiles on those keys. Hard to find any pictures of those profiles side by side on a board as well.

Surely this being the first keyset in this/these profiles doesn't preclude the existence of an image with them side by side on a keyboard, given that there are in existence images of them separately and an image of them back to back on a table. :D :D

I personally start to think about requesting a refund and not cause I don't want to wait a few more days, but cause I starting to loose confidence about this group buy.

I'm aware of lot of customers will want refunds due to this colour change, apologies to all who have been discouraged by the events of this group-buy.

Seem a dramatic color change for Devlin to go ahead with manufacture on, especially as they have produced that dark green before.

I'm still excited for the SkiData Q series.  The sample picture looks fine.  And I'm going to be using only 1U keys for my ortho boards so I don't care about the other profile keys.

It's sad that it has come to this.  Hopefully a Chinese company can replicate this profile.

With all the disappointments with Devlin I am considering cancelling the entire group-buy and offering the sets once they're actually available, with representative images that I have taken myself.

Last I checked you are able to fulfill SkiData orders. Can you explain why then you are considering not getting them to us? Seems to me like if the manufacturer ****ed up the product then you should have sufficient leverage to fulfill a portion of the order representative of the remaining demand for the product that they ****ed up. And if you can't, I would like to hear why not.

Yes, even after all the disappointments with Devlin, I'm still excited about the Skidata set. After the first update, I was certain I didn't want to get that QS profile mixed in my keyboard, so I came up with a unusual layout made up of a mix of a ISO (US?) and KBT Pure 60%:

161224-0

Keyboard Layout Editor

I'm really looking forward to use this layout. I must say I'm used to ISO-ES, ISO-UK and ANSI with different physical layouts.

That said, now for the disappointed me...

After the first update, I thought  Devlin should have made a commitment to make 2.25u and 2.75u Q series keycaps in the future, and for sure a Skidata add-on. They didn't, so no getting any standard ANSI/ISO layouts from them. Maybe they are fine just making some ortholinear keysets, more POS-compatible. I had committed to the GB so I decided not to cancel my order. Then I came up with my layout and, as I've already said, I'm really excited about it!

But this second update... I could expect quality issues, I could understand problems with molds which would justify missing sizes... But I can't believe this "dramatic color change" as rozakiin put it. Devlin must have been aware of it.

Well, anyway, I'm sorry you have to go through all this, Joe. It's nice you gave us the option to cancel orders with both updates.

In real life the failed Rad-Away is an amazing set, the colour is very desirable. Still a huge shame about the error of course but my faith in Devlin's keycap quality has been restored upon seeing the caps. They are very nice indeed.

Without the colour issues in the future I hope to bring a lot more K-series sets to market.

There's a picture of the UK ISO subset of Skidata in the update from UKKeycaps. There might still be some quality concerns, but looks great (that @ looks strange, but it might be the picture).

The orange looks pretty bleached out, the black pretty grey and the A a bit wobbly, but except from this it looks nice. Thank you for the pic. I for myself like the grey/bleached out orange more then black/saturated orange, but now all my Ergodox mods won't fit. I guess I should buy the set first and then the mods in the future.
Do you got some pics from the Rad-Away-set too?

And why do you experiencing this stress overload? Is this whole group-buy situation too much?

(oh and by the way the S, the X and probably the Z key are upside down)

So I'm curious about something.  If the Nuclear sets colors were thrown off because of HEX values then how is the Skidata set so much closer to the intended look?  Shouldn't that be way off as well?

The skidata colors ARE also off (compare the photo with the renders and you notice the black is grey and the orange is pretty desaturated) and no I didn't get some kind of notification.

Skidata does normally have a grey base, just a very dark grey, but it was never black.  The Skidata+ buy used N9 from GMK, which is the same base color as the dark mods on a dolch set.  CR is the color code for GMK black which would be used on a WoB set.  So a proper skidata rendition should be grey.

That being said, the orange is washed out, and is not as saturated as expected, but not too bad either.

I made an account just to post. I've been a mech kb enthusiast for a while but just never joined geekhack, deskthority etc.

The faded orange legends to me is a complete dealbreaker.

This set was to replace the one I use at work, which is a dark grey orange set (forgot name) that had legends moulded too thin throughout the entire GB. This made the legends inconsistent and faded in most areas.

I think you can still sell the radaway set because the mint color is so nice if you do not compare and bash against the color it is intended to be. Would like to see that faded mint keyset on a silver planck.

I'm sure you got a life and a job outside these group buys, but no matter how busy you're a short "I'm too busy it will take another five days" or  "Sorry guys I'm unable to geht these keycaps sent at the moment" would probably look a lot better than what you do at the moment.

Yea, kind of. While I admire your courage to deal with Devlin, this constant delays and your non existent communication about it are reason enough for me to never buy something from mechsupply again. The keycaps should have been shipped on the 24th February, then March 3rd, then a lot of tiny uncommented delays and now we have March 24th and still only a few sets seem to be send. I bet it is some hustle to do these group buys, especially problematic ones like this, but constantly posting shipping dates, which didn't work out, to be non responsive after doesn't seem like the best way to handle it.

Compared to other group buy runners he has had better than average communication.  If you want an example of "non existent communication" check over on Feng's POM group buy that has been running since August 2015.  I bet less than 1% of the posts are his.

If there was any perceived lack of communication or delayed shipping please at least consider Devlin totally boned this guy, HARD.  If I were in his shoes I'd probably have a nervous breakdown.

I don't see why it should be ok to communicate once in a blue moon, cause there are people who doesn't communicate at all. Everybody is free to do what he/she likes, but I don't participate in any groupbuys from people which can't leave a short message, after missing another shipping date. I think it's really not much to ask for.

Just because there are plenty of straight up awful GB runners, doesn't make this okay.
Sure, it wasn't his fault (as far as we know, and let's leave it at that), delays are pretty much a given in this niche - but a quick update every few days or so isn't too much to ask.

It would be a whole different game if we knew each other personally and he was doing us a favor of sorts - but here's the thing:
we're not friends, and he collected our money. I consider that a business contract -
and if you're conducting business, there are some obligations to your customers.
Like regular updates, for example.

I don't want to sound rude, he's probably going through difficult times right now and I get that -
but can it be an excuse when, again, someone is doing business?
What would happen if I said
"Hey, I'm broke at the moment because personal reasons - but I'd like to order 2 sets, and I'll pay for those .. eventually. Here's my address, send them over when they're finished, and you'll hear from me .. sometime. Probably."?
It wouldn't exactly work, right?

Due to the quality issues Skidata will be refunded. Customers who have already had their orders shipped will be emailed and offered a full refund for returning their set or refunded the difference of the price of the set when it is made available on Mechsupply (at least 20 cheaper than GB price)

An email will be sent to all customers tomorrow and the refunds will start being sent out tomorrow.

The most damaging part of the faults of this GB are not the loss I will personally make, but I'm afraid people will not trust Devlin products. I know they're capable, just need more hand holding then I gave them.

Geekhack exclusive edit: This GB has been a nightmare I admit, coupled with some pretty horrific personal events occurring at the same time. If you guys didn't know already both MechSupply and UKKeycaps are still run exclusively and only by me (Joe) including all email correspondence, forum posts, GB planning, order packing and shipping and logistics of storing and locating hundreds of items of Mech paraphernalia. Don't want this to get into sob-story territory but I'm doing the best I can with what I've got currently! You'll always get the product you paid for or a full refund.

I really don't see why the keycap quality issues your fault. I don't know maybe the wrong colors could be better next time, but the inconsistency in their molds, the QS issue and the pad printed caps are nothing which would be easy to fix for future group buys. Or am I wrong?

I'm really sorry for you regarding this personal events (whatever it is). I bet it's nothing small and I really understand that it can be really hard to wrap your head around something stupid and unimportant like a keycap group buy, if you currently have way bigger problems to handle. But the problem persists: Strangers trusted you and gave you their money to buy something with you/from you. And if you completely ignore them, instead of taking the few minutes to answer (how stupid it feels, if you got more important stuff in your head) your credibility will take damage from it.
That said I really take my hat off for the decision to completely refund this group buy (at own expenses) to sell the sets at a lower price. That's really a lot more than fair, especially since it doesn't seem to be your fault.

EDIT: Maybe you should send an email to all group buy members too, since not everyone is reading here or on deskthority.

I got out of the skidata buy a while ago and received a refund. While communication issues can be very annoying, the proof is in the pudding for me with this guy in that at the end of the day he took the loss instead of passing it on to customers. Not that this should be considered unique behavior, on the contrary I think its the ethical thing to do. But it is easy to imagine situations in which the gb leader just says "sorry guys, this is what we got." Although communication was sparse inbetween, there were in fact updates corresponding with each production issue that included offers for refunds, and he even offered refunds for products already shipped. Sure, you can apply traditional customer service axioms to criticism in this case, but is a keycap group buy really a traditional transaction? At some point we all should know what kinda thing this entails. Like I said, he made the option to get a refund profusely available to anyone and everyone at every point in this buy, which is more valuable to me than constant communication. I by no means am "never doing business" with this guy again. If anything, his customer service has left a positive taste in my mouth because he handled the most important part : making sure we don't get ****ed. And if he can get Devlin making good caps, then more power to him. But I'll sit out the next one and see how it turns out just in case.

I was buying on this mostly for the profile.  The quality issues suck but don't really bother me at all.  Since I'm working on ortholinear, I won't be using the Hold or |\ keys.  So I'll be buying it still.  I'm very thankful that you took the chance on another vendor and dealt with the pains of doing so.  I think in the end the community will be better for it.

I guess it's a stupid question, but are there TKL sets and num-pad-sets? Cause I've only seen the set on 60% keyboards so far.
And will the people of the group buy be informed if the set is available in the shop?

There are the Num+non-stan sets, they'll be available on UKKeycaps when the keysets are made available there.

There'll be a email sent to all mailing list subscribers when the keysets are available (the standard mailing list available on UKKeycaps and MechSupply).

They won't be put up for sale until all refunds are processed.

EDIT: The Hold and \| legends are engraved and infilled, not pad-printed.

Good price. Sorry about the issues but like you said with a little more guidance they'll get there.
