Topre Stem Swapping Guide?
« on: Fri, 28 October 2016, 13:03:52 »
I'm considering swapping the stems in my Realforce 87U with my 104U Silent, but I don't want to screw anything up. Anyone have a guide on stem swapping? I know some people have done it without incurring damage to the base of the stem but I can't find a good guide on the subject.

There isn't really anything to damage, I'd be more concerned with losing screws or springs. :D :thumb:

I've heard the mechanism (clips) that hold the stem in place at its base can be a booger to release without damage.

There is a small piece of plastic on the top of the topre slider that keeps it from just falling out when disassembled it won't hurt anything if those are damaged.

FYI: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=64974.0

I just used the rubber butt end of a screwdriver and pushed from the top down until the slider popped out.

Bought about 200 Cherry MX stems from Taobao. Never got the chance to put them into use.

Yeah, trust me,I was worried about this too when I lubed up my silent 104UB Ducky Realforce, as one slider did have the nub get nicked a little, not even snapped all the way off, and it did fall out, but SpamRay is right, it doesn't hurt anything once assembled as the nub on the slider is at the top of its neck and so it isn't keeping the slider suspended over the dome or anything like that.

tl;dr, yeah, what Spam said. It's just there to keep them from falling out when disassembled.
