Hi again~
« on: Sun, 01 January 2017, 20:57:53 »
Hello GHers! I haven't been around in a couple years but I've been browsing a bit more today. I'm sure a lot has changed since I left, so I decided to say hello~ I used to be a huge cherry MX fan but I've turned to the other side and I'm a topre girl now. I'll be lurking in the artisan area because there are so many gorgeous key caps, and classifieds to see if I can find a beloved sakura topre from KK.. <3

Cheers!

Kellybear, you may be the perfect person for a total novice like me to talk to, given your MX->Topre switch. Please forgive my ignorance, as I am a total novice outsider, contemplating a Topre board as my first mechanical board.

Are the stem converters that allow for using MX keys on Topre boards not a viable option? I've been wondering this, as I look at all the beautiful MX caps available out there (including KK's).

Hello! Unfortunately I don't have extensive knowledge in terms of modifying topre stems to support MX key caps(kind of browsing around to learn more about it myself). The only board I currently know of that allows the use of MX caps on topre switches is the Novatouch. I'm not a huge fan of it myself but I believe several members have used one so they can provide you with more information. If you're really into MX key caps I would consider purchasing a board that supports them. Until I find out more information on it myself, this is what I would consider. Plus, if you're joining this community, there's no such thing as just having one keyboard ;)

Keep in mind that Novatouch stems and most hybrid stems simply won't work with keycaps from certain artisan makers (Bro is one of them). It is possible to get a 3D printed non-hybrid cherry mx stem for Topre slider housing from Shapeways but that'll cost you $6+ per key iirc but even then you might have some issues with artisans

Haha. I hear you on the "no one here has one keyboard" thing. That being said, I might end up in the same boat myself someday... In the meantime, I am looking at a Torpe keyboard myself, but also want to have the *option* to mod in the future. From what I have seen of the artisan/novelty keycaps, there is much more variety on the Cherry MX side of things. I will have to keep a closer eye on the classifieds here, perhaps I've only just scratched the surface of what's offered...

The Shapeway converter is what I was referring to, not the hybrid stems in the Novatouch. The converter appears to allow Cherry MX to plop right into a Topre slider (or perhaps it's really the converter that replaces the slider). I have seen a "Beta 2.0" for sale on there for ~$2.50 each... is this the predecessor, or the ancestor of the $6 version? I wonder... hah

I believe Matt3o created the one that sold for $6 per. I guess 2.0 is the predecessor *shrug* Maybe demand was low for 1.0? Will we ever know the answer? Tune in next week

Hmm 🤔. Honestly I would just get one topre board and then maybe a poker. It's small and when you first start out it's not too costly. That way you can still get stuff from the MX side of things too whenever you want to. PLUS poker cases are preeeeettttyyyyyy. You can't get a topre as your only board starting out if you want to explore the artisan world, it doesn't work that way. Some artisan stuff is topre but MX just has soooo much more.

I'm not trying to deter you away from getting a topre as your first board, but if you're like me and just got started in the keyboard community, you'll be surly if you don't have an MX one too.
