What are your thoughts on the Keycool 84?
« on: Sun, 19 February 2017, 05:46:57 »
I am looking at buying a keycool 84 with cherry clears. Anyone have experience with this keyboard? What's the build quality like? Key wobble? Any other recommendations for a 75%?

Also, first post! Howdy geekhack!

Keycool 84 has been a beginner staple for a while. I think most people here have good things to say about it.

I had a Keycool 87. Was a nice keyboard actually. Mine came with medium-thickness PBT and they had an unusually dry texture for PBT.

One of the extendable legs was a bit shorter than the other which meant it wobbled with them extended and the case was creaky, but was a good board other than that.

I have keycool84 with cherry red and it was good with a set of aftermarket pbt. The spacebar is a bit loud but besides that, its a really good board.   :thumb:

My KC84 is honestly one of the best board I've ever owned. It's the second board I ever bought (back in 2013) and I still have it. Mine had MX Browns but the build quality was great and 75% is the best layout as well (in my opinion).
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I get terrible rattle on all the stabilized keys (spacebar is the worst)on my keycool 84 hero with kailh browns. other than that it's pretty nice and 75% is also my favorite size/layout.

with the exceptions of the leopold 750r, kul es 87, and cheap tomoko 87 (oddly enough), all the other mx boards i have tried with cherry style stabilizers have awful rattling that drives me insane. i guess most people enjoy the rattle?

Decent little board, and clears are a nice switch.  Love 75% layout personally.  Several people have mentioned noisy stabilizers, but you can lube stabilizers while they're in place with some thick lube which should help dramatically.

FWIW I have a KeyCool 87 with MX reds (actually typing on it now).

It has been rock solid since the day I bought it.  It is a white one, and it really is whiter than white, which makes a really nice base for some keycap sets (in contradistinction to the black of gray cases on most of my other keyboards).

The keycaps are great, although the legends are ever so slightly inconsistent, although that doesn't really bother me.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
