Donut Cables - Soldering/Desoldering, Cables, and GBs
« on: Wed, 17 May 2017, 04:19:49 »
Currently normal cable orders are on hold pending site work and receiving cable stock.

I've been here long enough I figured it's about time I got a thread going. You may know of me(highly unlikely, but there's a chance) from running the GMK Coniferous GB a couple months back, but the majority of my contribution to the keyboard community is through my custom cables.

Unfortunately it's a little difficult to post a bunch of pictures of my work here, but I do have a couple albums at https://donutcables.com/gallery/ and I'll leave a couple more pics here for you to enjoy

At this point the only way to do custom USB C would be USB2.0 over C since that's what there are connectors available for, and even then not all the connectors come with the proper resistors for C(mostly a problem with the cheaper connectors). At this time, I haven't seen a demand for 2.0 over C, but if a demand does present itself then I can work on finding a good source of the connectors that work properly.

Probably possible, but I'd have to find a source of connectors for them as well as a good way to test them. You find me some connectors and I'll look further ;)

Looks like I know what I'll be doing tomorrow.

In other news, I've finally gotten a decent workspace setup and have gotten orders #33635 through #33650 out this week and you should have received a tracking number and order completion email. Hopefully I can make some more headway in both my backlog and stem orders over the next week, but I'll be away from my tools and at my mom's house over the weekend, so I don't anticipate much progress during that time.

Coniferous seems to be right on track as there's been no news of delays, so we should still expect July 5th delivery to me and shipping invoices/address confirmations over the week after that. Unfortunately I've got jury duty the 13th, so that might slow down my packing and shipping while that's going on.

I've still got the metal braid cable GB on the back burner until I get time between backlog cables, stem GB, Coniferous, daily work, and living between houses. Having this much of a wait for them at least I have time to plan the GB well.

Will there be a cable to match Coniferous? I got one of Ryknos slots and I'd love to add one :D

Update

I'm currently running an IC for metal braid cables at https://donutcables.com/metal-ic/
This includes brass, copper, and stainless steel braids in 3ft/6ft lengths with clear heatshrink in standard connector configurations.

I'm looking into doing them, but I need sets on hand first to attempt to color-match with some paracords I've got on hand.

Gotcha. Look forward with what you come up with. Would love to get one shipped with my set :D

I'm also liking the metal cables. Would love steel and brass. Hope it happens.

Figured I'd make a combination post since I've got a lot of info to go over.

---

First up, Coniferous. FedEx currently has it in Memphis. Granted, they've had it since Sunday without bothering to contact me about it and I had to find out the roundabout way. A little bit of filling out paperwork and paying scary customs fees and it's on its way to me so I can wrap it in tons of bubblewrap and ship it out.

In addition, I've managed to order the nifty stickers for Coniferous that I talked about ****ing ages ago. These are 2"x3" diecuts that I think are going to look pretty great for most anything. ~~I'll probably have a form up for them soon~~ The form is up now with prices at $1 for people that bought the set and $1.50 for people that didn't get the set but want a neat sticker anyhow. I can ship them in with the set but will probably have to figure out how stamps work for those that didn't get a set :P

---

Moving to GMK F Yourself, the joke that just keeps existing longer than it should. Originally just a product of unproductive ****ery, a lot of people have actually expressed interest in the set, so I've looked a bit further into attempting to make it happen. Due to the high number of custom legends, the only company that would be able to make those molds affordably would be SP, but I don't feel like waiting 3yrs for a set or dealing with their excessive pricing for individuals attempting to run GBs.

I've actually contacted Christoph since he made the mistake(jk) of saying he'd be happy to work with me on future projects, and he confirmed that GMK can do padprinting, which while not as durable as double-shotting, would still allow thick GMK ABS at a reasonable price point, maybe. Hopefully Christoph won't be too shocked when I do send him a mockup :P ~~I will have a poll up~~ A poll is up for the now-named GMK Profane deciding whether to stick to the original concept of maximum ****ery, or continue with my current more "refined" concept.

---

A small note on the donut81, since it kinda just disappeared from existence without a trace. Moving really messed me up with basically everything and even now I'm still pulling stuff out of totes and going "ah, that's where that went". At this point I still don't have a working Rev2 prototype since SMD soldering is hard, and I really don't want to risk any design issues by just running the GB without proper testing. Over the next few weeks I may attempt SMD soldering one more time before finding someone that can do it right, which I probably should have done from the start, welcome to hindsight.

---

Finally, Metal Braid Cables, which a lot of people seem to be excited about. First up, some awesome highres pics with questionable focus since my tripod is still packed away:

I'm looking to have a pre-order form up soon, possibly this weekend, so stay tuned.
