The effort on creating or designing something need to be respected. I do respect all the designers.

In lieu of obtaining permission, you should minimally credit the original design.
If you don't have the decency to pay such simple courtesy, you are a COPYCAT.

actually, i messaged back and forth with duck about this today, he couldn't care less

the sides look nothing like the blackbird, which is all he cares about really

unless you'd like to get pissy about 96key layouts too, since duck came up with that as well, and how many of those credit him?

this is just how the community is, something becomes hard enough to get, a copy will eventually pop up

if he was selling these on taobao as "duck blackbird" i'd be annoyed, sure, but this is a unique design, so that's not a concern

Thanks Puddsy. Duck is a respectful designer and also a reasonable man.

I would ask for permission if we really copied something I think we shouldn't. I didn't ask because I don't think layout is something need to be protected. And many people, including Duck apparently, agree with me. If I don't believe in this, even the 96key layout example doesn't make it legit to me.

I'd like to credit my boy Christopher Latham Sholes for the design of every single keyboard I own just so we don't step on anyone's toes here.

Please.

If they do make the change, i hope the offer both plates. I don’t really need any extra gaps in my plate :P

I totally get the benefits of universal plates and ****, but to me it’s night and day how much better a plate cut to a single layout looks.

Couldn't agree more. I hate how universal plates have pretty much the entire bottom cut out.

pics of PCB please?

Right now I only have the first version prototype PCB. https://imgur.com/a/PLWoF

Several mistakes were fixed. Some components are changed as well.

I'm not in China but Alsoran will send me the final version PCB for testing.

The final version of PCB will be in matte black.

It's funny that I've been using compact keyboards with no function row for years (Leopold FC660M, TADA68, Tina, etc) and only now have I seen this yearn for split backspaces.

Ah well, I guess it's not that big of a change to make. Kinda funny though.

It’s usually not mentioned because almost all custom kits, including the Tina pcb, already have the option. No need to ask for it if it’s already there.

As someone who has been lusting after a black bird, hates paying resale, and never gets in the Duck GB’s I have to say this will be hard to pass up. Split backspace is my preferred configuration too, so I’m pleased it’s in. I would prefer ISO Enter as well but hey, nothing’s perfect ;)

Hi guys. I need your suggestions on the plates.

Two people asked for plates with cutouts for all single switches. Firstly, caps lock slot will be a compatible slot. Then two slots, the BS and right shift, need to be confirmed.

Now we got:

  • Two options for BS: split or not
  • Two options for right shift: split or not
  • Two options for the whole plate: switch openable or not

As a result, there're 8 combinations in total. We're gonna provide two of them.

My preferred options are:

  • Split BS, split right shift, switch openable
  • None split BS, none split right shift, switch openable

I always prefer switch openable because it's very helpful for lubing switches.

I don't have a problem with a single plate that had split backspace, both caps lock and split right shift. If some people are that bothered by being able to see a slither of PCB, go for one that's ANSI with both caps lock (can't see that) and the other with split BS/right shift.

I don't it's worth having 2 but whatever

As long as it doesn't have iso or a swiss cheese bottom row I think most people will be fine with 1 plate; being split bs/shift and stepped/nonstepped caps lock.

A small thing, could the pcb not be matte? Matte finished pcbs attract finger oils super bad and are hard to clean /:

Likely in tho either way, happy split bs is supported (:

I guess the black color should be similar to the PCB of Time TKL. Time TKL used a black color PCB, the black not very bright.

Whats the proposed timeline?

Actually the Chinese GB has already started. I'd like to finish all the modifications according to the current suggestions first.

After everything is settled, GB will be opened on Geekhack.

I think I made a mistake on explaining the options for the plate. Actually the options should be like this:

  • options for BS: none split BS, split BS, compatible BS
  • options for right shift: none-split, split, compatible

Our current plan is to provide:

  • BS and right shift are all compatible slots. This is the option that most custom keyboard kits provide
  • BS and right shift are all cut for split slots. This is the option for those who want a tight plate and more keys.

The first option will be available for sure. The second one is negotiable because it's for only several people who asked. Feel free to make your comments if you really like this board and can't deal with both two options.

I also suggest to make the stabs removable with the plate, so that you won't need to desolder all  the switches if you messed up the stabs.

With all this talk of solut BS. I just want to confirm that caps lock supports centered and off-centered.

Also, I'd just offer one plate with both split options instead of two options.

Sorry, no pure WKL option in this GB.

That pic is a render. 3 or 4 pics in that album were renders. Someone else were interested in that color as well when they saw that render. My friend tried to make it real but the color turns out to be totally different.
