Painting stainless steel plate.
« on: Tue, 30 January 2018, 11:13:22 »
Alright, I'm gonna spray paint my plate. Just wanna check this is a good way before going ahead.

1: rough it up a little with wire wool/sandpaper.
2. Spray white primer.
3. Spray main colour in coats til satisfied.
4. Apply what? Clear coat?

My main concern is that the keys are gonna hit the plate sometimes so I don't want the paint to chip. Any advice from people who've done this before would be greatly appreciated so I can learn from your mistakes without having to make them myself. Cheers!

I have painted several, and here is how I do it:

1. Sand the top surface of the plate with 80 grit sandpaper
2. Spray thin coats of paint (usually 3-4), allowing to dry at least 15 minutes between coats.
3. Allow plate to dry for 24-48 hours before installing switches and stabilizers.
4. Profit?

I don't find the need for a clear coat. The keycaps should never hit the plate, as the switch bottoms out before the sides of the cap would touch.

Thank you, I guess I had a misconception of what bottoming out is. I'm planning on using Krylon, which I'm guessing is fine. Do you have any particular recommendation?

I normally use Krylon, also, so you should be good.

I have also used Rustoleum with good results.
