[GB] ScrabblePad PCB - GB Orders Almost Complete
« on: Sun, 24 June 2018, 13:22:36 »
Welcome to the GB thread for the ScrabblePad PCB, an accompaniment to the Novelkeys/JOlimon Scrabble Board case as well as a standalone meme macro pad of ridiculous proportions!

Order link(works for mobile!) - https://goo.gl/forms/OYq6LbMp7FRrbMFA3
The form is currently open for the first ~24hrs to let people check for errors or stuff I've missed. Pending there being no issues the form will be officially accepting submissions starting tomorrow.

Some of the footprint details

Current features are as follows:

 - 15x15 matrix for 225 total switches
 - NKRO capable with supported firmware
 - Teensy++2.0 equivalent controller
 - QMK/TMK and other firmware compatible
 - SPI and I²C breakouts
 - MicroSD reader and TRRS port footprints
 - RGB strip header
 - Expansion pin breakouts
 - 16 total mounting points for flex-free mounting to a PCB plate for standalone usage

Example of using a second PCB as a plate for standalone operation

There are several sets of components in this GB and I'll outline them below in some detail with their pricing:

 - PCB
This is a bare PCB that requires a minimum of a controller and diodes to function. A second PCB and the Mounting Pack can be used to replace the need for a case. Price points are as follows:
5 units - $20/ea
10 units - $19/ea
15 units - $18/ea
20 units - $17/ea
25 units - $16.5/ea
30 units - $16/ea
50 units - $15.5/ea
75 units - $13.5/ea
100 units - $12/ea
500 units - $9/ea

 - Diodes
Standard 1N4148 diodes, come in packs of 250, enough for the board and some extras to account for defects, mistakes, and dropping them. Diode price points are as follows:
10 packs - $4/ea
40 packs - $3.15/ea
80 packs - $2.7/ea

 - Controller
The controller I'm offering for this drop is a Teensy++2.0 equivalent. Functionally the same and able to utilize the Teensy.exe app or QMK Toolbox for flashing. Included with the controller is a stick of 40 header pins to solder it to the PCB. As part of ordering this controller through me I will pre-flash a default map, test for mapping and functionality, and remove the LED on pin D6 which is a required mod for use in this board.
$13.25/ea(half the price of a "normal" Teensy++2.0)

 - Mounting Pack
The Mounting Pack includes the hardware necessary to mount a second PCB to the bottom of the board to work as a plate/case for the board if you don't have the Novelkeys/JOlimon case. Included are 20 bumpons, 18 7mm standoffs, and 36 screws, enough for the board and a few extras in case you drop any.
Price for the Mounting Pack is:
10 packs - $2.50/ea
50 packs - $2/ea

Planned GB period run dates are from 6/25 to 7/16. Orders will be processed to invoices the following week. Production timeline is expected to be <1month after payment is received. PCBs themselves should take 1-2weeks, components could take up to 3 weeks from the order date to ship to me.

Shipping will be invoiced separately. Proxies for other countries will be made available if there is the numbers to support them. CONUS orders should be able to ship via First Class, Intl orders will ship either Intl First Class or via proxies.

Let me know if I've missed anything important.

Seems like imgur links are still having issues.

In other news, we're past the 15 unit price drop on the PCBs and past the 10 unit MOQs for the other components.

I've been having trouble all week getting imgur pictures to show up on this forum.  I'm glad it's not just me, because I was going crazy trying to see if it was some adblock setting causing me trouble.

And more on topic, congrats on the launch!

Today's numbers:

PCB - 53/50 75 - price at $15.50
Diodes - 45/40 80 - $3.15 current price
Controller - 43
Mounting Pack - 25/50

We're moving right along considering this is just 1 week after the GB opened. I'm looking forward to shooting right past that 100 unit price drop point at this rate.

What did you mean by "bumped to 10moq" on 6/26?
Is the Mounting Pack's MOQ now 50?
Or has it met MOQ, current price is $2.50 and drops to $2.00 at 50 orders?

10 was the MOQ, so when it was at 9 units I went ahead and counted it since it was close enough. 50 is the price drop point.

Oh good.  I was confused because your 7/2 post just said "Mounting Pack - 25/50" with no mention of the current price.

Invoicing is currently in progess and you should expect to see an invoice later today or early tomorrow. There were 9 orders to EU and 5 to Australia, making them both viable for proxying. We ended up with these final order quantities:

 - 87 PCBs, 52.2lbs or 23.22kg(oh fuk)
 - 67 Diode packs or 16,750 total diodes(wew!)
 - 70 Controllers
 - 42 Mounting packs

Currently sitting at 6 unpaid invoices, so please make sure to check your trash/spam folders to make sure they're not getting caught somewhere. Hopefully we can get these all paid this weekend and start getting components ordered early next week.

Alright, after a bit of *friendly persuasion* all the invoices are paid. Our final numbers after some adjustments:

PCBs - 86
Diode Packs - 65
Controllers - 68
Mounting Packs - 41

I'll begin preparing to submit payment to the vendors and hope to submit the orders early this coming week for fast turnaround.

Wow, that's a lot of counting!  Or you could use weight, as long as you error on the side of sending too many diodes...

Most of the small components are in the mail currently. PCBs themselves are in production and should be shipped soon. Assuming no issues this is actually looking to be a slightly quicker turnaround than I anticipated.

Another small update, received the box of controllers today, so soon I'll be able to start working my way through testing them, flashing a base layout, and removing the LED from them since D6 is part of the matrix.

On an unrelated note, has anyone else been having issues receiving reply notifications on threads set to "Notify"?

I don't know about that, but the other day every time I tried to submit a reply to a quoted post, it kept wanting to create a whole new thread.  That was really weird.  *shrugs*
That eventually stopped happening after awhile.

Perhaps some hanky panky is going on under the geekhack hood right now.

A couple days ago I could get in to Geekhack and view things, but the first time I tried to reply or quote it would just lock up.  Then once it pulled up a text-only screen with a bunch of links and a note saying the site was in the middle of an update.  The next day it seemed to work fine.  Maybe the "Notify" problem is related to the update?

Yes, currently Mechboards.co.uk is set to proxy the EU orders for these since their weight and size would make individual shipment an issue.

Hey Is there any update on this GB?

Orders have been steadily going out and I'm over halfway through the US orders. As it turns out, even with a counting scale dealing with loose diodes is a pain since they all want to just tangle together and never align nicely for moving them around or packaging. I'll be looking to have the proxy orders started next week sometime hopefully.

From what I can see from the pics it appears that the teensy clone is mounted so the reset button faces the pcb. Is that correct? If so, do you think there would be an issue to mount the teensy clone on the other side with the reset button facing out. Downsides I see are either having all the labels on the switch side or having labels on the bottom and losing three switches (oh how will I live with only 222 left lol). Benefits I see for me personally are ability to socket with cheaper sockets (not low profile) and having the reset button exposed.

Couldn’t you just wire a switch to the RST & +5V pins at the end of the clone’s board?  Maybe you’d have to include the GND in there too, I’m not sure on that detail.

Switches can only go in from the top, so if you were to put the controller on the top you'd have to miss those switches. Right now you can just use a pair of tweezers to short RST to the Gnd pin right next to it, though that might be difficult inside a case.

Couldn’t you just wire a switch to the RST & +5V pins at the end of the clone’s board?  Maybe you’d have to include the GND in there too, I’m not sure on that detail.

You want RST and Gnd. Definitely possible to solder in some leads to a pushbutton. Routing them to a footprint for a button on the board itself would have been ideal, but there's a switch footprint right in the way. Welcome to the constraints of using a separate controller.

In other news, some more orders went out this week, though I'm not sure if they'll move much when most of NC is panicking about "the end of the world via watery wind". Hoping to get the majority of the remaining US orders out this coming week and move onto the proxy orders.

Is the best momentary connection of RST and GND thru a resistor?  Or is a direct momentary connection perfectly fine?

Small update, orders that should have gone out Friday went out today because I had to go drag my granddad's tractor out of the field Friday and it ate into the short amount of time the local post office has the desk open on Fridays.

Also, I don't know if I ever actually posted about flashing the board or anything relevant to assembly. https://config.qmk.fm/#/scrabblepad/LAYOUT can be used to easily make a layout for the board. Hopefully when I've got time that isn't taken up by OG Coils I can put more information for the board at the github page for it https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/master/keyboards/scrabblepad.

As a relative newb to such matters, I know I personally would be greatly appreciative of any build and configuration guides that you or anyone else would be so gracious to make.

On a related note, I just got my Novelkeys Scrabblepad board in the mail today! :D

EU and other proxy orders are right behind the last few US orders. Should be much quicker on my end to get them packed up since I don't have to package them individually like the rest of the orders.

Any idea on when that should be?

Finishing US orders this weekend, should be able to get invoices for EU out this week.

Update: The last of the US orders are shipped minus a couple unpaid stragglers. Currently working on packing the EU orders and bulk shipment invoices should be out tomorrow or Friday.

Mine was one of those in the last bunch!
Looks like I might have it by Saturday.

Status update: Australia orders are out, Canada orders are out, two US orders are waiting for payment before they can go out, EU proxy order is waiting for three to pay before it can be shipped. Other than that GB orders are complete. I'll be waiting until I can get those orders out and hear back from the proxies before putting the extras up for grabs.
