The best we can hope for is someone practical/pragmatic (focused on results) rather than someone ideological/loyalty based. Bloomberg is a good example. He's a kick ass mayor because he's so results-focused (like a CEO, which he once was). But he'd never survive a national campaign.

I hear nothing but good things about Bloomberg.  The only problem I can think of about having someone like him in office is that, on a national-level, there are more political/moral/religious issues (e.g. abortion, prayer in schools, etc.) that I'm not sure a politician like Bloomberg would be the be best to handle.*  That said, I think he would be awesome at handling things like healthcare, the budget, financial reform, etc. even if I didn't align with his views on some things.

*Now that I think about it, he might be OK in a particular sense on these issues, as he might just stay neutral and not try to get involved in those issues.

yea its hard to tell how he'd handle himself in the heat of a national campaign. NYC is safely left-of-center, we dont get hit in our local politics with the polarizing national-level stuff.  That said, the few times Bloomberg has expressed opinions on national-level issues, he's been fairly diplomatic so far.

I remember watching a speech he gave in virginia to some business group, it was televised on c-span. His topic was gun control and how NYC deals with it (and how he'd like to see the nation deal with it) in terms of finding a balance between the rights of hunters and individuals vs the common sense controls and limits local governments need to make.  (Even free speech isnt totally free, cant yell fire in a theatre and etc, cant do libel, the freedom comes with checks and balances and responsibilities).

He was facing a mostly southern pro-gun crowd, and I thought he handled himself really really well during the Q & A period.  What I remember most was that he had a real sense of humor which defused the polarizers. And his point was always how to find a balance between individual freedom and social responsiblity -- he's a genuine political moderate, in that sense.

Very true.  I don't vote for president, we vote for president, and most people do not make well-formed decisions on who to vote for.  Many people just vote how their parents vote regardless of their stand on a particular issue, and people in the south vote conservative even if it's not in their personal best interest.

seriously! lol.

Possible RNC endorsed candidates:
-romney  (the hair will sink him)
-jeb bush (is the country ready for the third bush?)
-scott brown (he's the dark horse here I think. I mean, for god's sake, he won in massachusetts, which has to be one of the signs of armageddon)
-cheney (will the Dark Lord survive his next 5 heart attacks and run in 2012?)
-palin (yay!)

But we can't take the chance that she might actually get in...

These are Americans we're talking about, welly. Oh wait.

lol, believe me, we in the northeast are in a different country.  we have more in common with toronto than, say, chattanooga. And yea, after bush and scott brown all bets are off in this country's elections, sad to say. But at least with palin we'll be laughing all the way to ruin ;)

I'd prefer palin to cheney for instance. Palin would be hilarious as president, a kind of goofy incompetent giraffe bumping into things and mangling interviews. (Bush-lite?).  Cheney is just pure evil, lol. I mean just look at him. There's no laughs there, just start building your bomb shelter and home school the kids :)

People in my city recently really disappointed me with their uh, well, themselves, as reveals in the comment section of an online newspaper article.

Let's just say my city seems to be full of racist bible-thumping homophobic antisocial crazies. And no, I won't capitalize "bible" because that creates an implication of importance to me.

This was relevant but a series of quick edits removed the relevance because it would be offensive to residents of certain areas of the US.

america is the place everyone [strike]comes[/strike] arrives to start over.

you know what? I hate that the word 'comes' can no longer be used normally. First they stole "gay", then "comes". One can no longer say "I'm feeling gay and I'm coming" without being arrested. Doesnt seem right.

Other ruined words: facial.  The spa industry is probably scrambling to come up with an alternative.

Also ruined, thanks to itlnstln: stranger.

...I sit there staring and there's nothing else to do.

It took me like 10 years before I realized what that song was about. I initially thought it was some kind of political statement. Not quite :)

I always thought REM's "The one I love" could be easily interpreted as a, er, gratification song.

This one goes out to the one I love
THis one goes out to the one I left behind
A simple prop, to occupy my time
This one goes out to the one I love -- Fire!

What I like about that song by the way, is there are no other lines other than just those four -- but you dont really notice that.

(I always thought peter buck's black n white was a gretsch duo jet, apparently its a rickenbacker 360. Who knew.)

That "debate" was horrible.  It didn't matter what question was asked, Palin would spout off some entirely off-topic, canned response.  It was comical.

SNL *nailed* that parody so perfectly.  I'm one of those who laments that SNL hasnt been funny in over a decade, but the palin parodies could not have been better.

Yeah, I thought the SNL skit was a re-airing of the debate.  Then I saw the guy playing Biden and realized it wasn't.  Fey was money as Palin.

Palin did a SNL cameo late in the election season when Alec Baldwin hosted. Baldwin mocks Palin to her face thinking it's Fey and not Palin.
