I like my keyboard, but not the layout
« on: Sun, 25 April 2010, 19:41:48 »
I moded my cherry G80-1800 to a combination of cherry black switches with cherry brown springs. I love it's tactile feel so much.

What I don't like is it's layout.
A unix layout would be much better for me ("Esc" key swapped with "~" key, and "Backspace" swapped with "\" key), because I am using Emacs + viper on a Mac.

The solution could be buying a HHKB lite 2 or a HHKB pro 2. But I am not sure if any one of them would be as good as my current keyboard. Besides I do like my current keyboard, it's kind of waste to buy something else and put this up on the shelf.

I also tried softwares to remap the keys, but no solution actually works on Mac. Xmodmap works great, but it only works for applications in X11.

Any suggestions?

Just use some software to modify the signals. And switch the key caps if necessary.

Someone else just started a thread about the same thing earlier today. He has a Mac and wanted to remap some stuff on his Model M.

There are two remapping programs mentioned in that thread. At least one of those will work just fine for remapping these keys.

Num Lock + Mac = impossible?

There is something wrong with this statement.  That said, good work on the mod.  I'm just counting down the days...
