Hey Geekhack!

I want to provide this service today to others that either don't have a reliable cerakote shop close to them that they can take their boards to. The shop is located in San Antonio, and the prices are very reasonable and are relatively cheap compared to other shops I have talked to. A few months ago I took my Noxary X60 to get cerakoted, here are the results!

OFFICIAL DISCORD: https://discord.gg/sgcqgWK

Here's a spreadsheet of where I am at on the current wave

I left my Pearl with the owner on monday, he told me he was going to try and get it done by Friday of this week but surprised me and had it done today!

Here is the first picture of the Pearl! I'll be picking that up today and building it once I lube my Zealios v2s for it.

With those two boards looking amazing I decided to ask him if he would mind if I started bringing him more boards, and he was thrilled with the idea!

This is my first time ever running a service like this so I want to make sure I have all my bases covered for not only me but the consumers and the shop. With that being said I will only be accepting 40 boards this run. This is just the first test if everything comes out perfectly and everyone loves the results I will offer this service again at a later period of time.

I will be posting pics of more boards that I get cerakoted in a album on imgur you can find that link right here: https://imgur.com/a/eIy8SsM

What is Cerakote?

Cerakote is a ceramic based finish that can be applied to metals, plastics, polymers and wood. The unique formulation used for Cerakote ceramic coating enhances a number of physical performance properties including abrasion/wear resistance, corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, impact strength, and hardness. Cerakote will also remove most blemishes from whatever surface it is applied to.

The specific shop that I will be mainly using the H series oven cured colors but can do any series colors. Here are all the base colors from the H Series: https://www.cerakote.com/finishes/?tab=coatings&cat=HSERIES

The H Series is one of the toughest series and is very durable.

Please be aware that in order to cerakote the keyboards the shop owner will sandblast the anodization off the keyboard then coat the board in the ceramic finish. This won't effect tolerances all that much. I have tested that out with my Noxary X60 and everything seems to fit just fine.

If you would for whatever reason want to re-anodize the board be aware that you will need to talk to your anodizer before proceeding with doing that.

The service will work as followed below:

1) I will email you so we can figure out shipping arrangements (which carrier, insurance, and cost to and from), after they have been figured out I will invoice you through Paypal.
2) Once the board arrives to me I will take it to the shop the next day
3) It will take 1 to 2 weeks for the shop to coat the board correctly
4) The shop will give me a call once they are finished and will send me pics of the finished board
5) If you satisfied I will proceed to go pick up the board the same day and mail out the keyboard back to the you the next day.

Total Service Time: 14 days per wave (May take more days depending on shipping location)

Estimated completion date of all 40 boards: April 28th, 2019

Pricing

Pricing will range depending on the surface area of the board and shipping locations

US Orders will be shipped back in USPS Flat Rate Boxes, insurance is also an added cost for the shipping price,

Small Size Estimated Price (Normal sized 65%, 60% and smaller): $35 + shipping from me when the board is complete

Medium Size Estimated Price (75%, TKL's, 1800 and up to Full Size): $50 + shipping from me when the board is complete

Anything with a larger surface area might be more expensive.

ALL 40 SPOTS ARE FILLED

Update (1/18/19): Spoke with the Shop Owner (Abel) and he let me know that MAO can be sandblasted off just like normal anodization. Him and I will be testing PLA to see if it can be cerakoted, I have recieved a few messages regarding trying to get a dactyl cerakoted, I would rather test out a cheap 3D printed Planck case before people start sending theirs just to make sure it will work. He is also going to get me a color ring with every single H Series color on it. As of right now I can say that each color texture will vary, some are smooth, some are a little bit rougher!

Update 2 (1/18/19): Just got in touch with the first 5 board owners. I will be running this service in waves of 5 boards at a time, in total there will be 8 waves totaling in 40 boards. I will updated the title every time a new wave starts so people will see the progress. Currently at the time of writing this 27 spots have been taken, leaving 13 spots left. Once those fill up the form will close.

Update 3 (1/21/19): We are down to the last 3 spots in the service! Thank you all for the warm reception, I will be picking up the last remaining boards this week and hope to get them down to the shop before Wednesday.

Update 4 (1/22/19): Added a wait list spreadsheet to show people where I currently at in the service, this is also a good way to reconfirm what color you are getting for your board. If you want to change color or want to change what board you are getting coated PM me either on here, on reddit u/tyson522 or on discord Tyson#0522.

Update 5 (1/24/19): Form filled up, entry to the form has been closed off for now. I'll open it again once all 40 boards are finished and mailed back to their owners. Oh and also, I accepted 7 boards for the first wave, so it looks like I might be able to complete this faster if I keep accepting 7. I'm changing the number of waves to 6 and will be looking to complete all the boards ASAP. :)

Update 6 (1/28/19): Wave 1 boards have been dropped off with cerakote shop, 11 boards in total. Some VIPs got in on top of the 5 first boards for the wave, will start including 10 boards per wave. Changing the amount of waves again to 4 waves as I now know I can handle 10 boards and feel confident that we will get all the boards cerakoted on time! Once the first 4 waves are done I might take a break to make sure the Austin, TX Meetup that I'm hosting goes smoothly on April 6th, but will promptly pick back up right after that meetup ends. I'll probably expand the next list to 50 boards.

Update 7 (1/31/19): Stopped by the shop to drop off a my 60XT along with a friends board, the owner said that most of them will be ready for pick up tomorrow! We talked for a bit and he mentioned that they can also do some pretty cool designs if anyone was interested in having a design on a board. He also mentioned that they can do some special pearlescent colors and told me to check out Gun Candy if anyone wanted to see what those colors look like.

Update 8 (2/5/19):Just spoke to Abel from the shop, gloss black, graphite black and zombie green boards are all done. Which means my Nightfox, Japanesehorrorwriter's Pearl and Poblopuablo's Lunar AEK are done.  I will try to pick these up today on my lunch break! I also created a discord for the service! I'll be posting updates and everything in there on top of keeping this thread updated. Hope to see you in there! https://discord.gg/sgcqgWK

Update 9 (2/13/19):I have quiet a bit of news! I've received 8 of the 9 boards for Wave 2, I have been trying to contact the owner of the last board to get him to mail it out, but unfortunately he has yet to mail it out. Instead of waiting for his board to come in I'm just going to take all 8 to the shop tomorrow. They will be working on the boards as fast as they can as Tara (the shop owners wife and assistant) will be giving birth on Monday. Because of this wave 2 might take a little longer to be completed, or all the boards might get completed faster and be done by Sunday. Either case, I will be contacting Wave 3 people when the shop is back up and running. Hopefully that doesn't take too long. I will keep everyone updated on this situation! Thankfully we are head of the schedule that I set in place.

Update 11 (2/14/19): Went to the shop today, none of the boards were done.  I did walk into the back of the shop and saw the QKL on a table along with THE50's getting prepped to get media blasted.
Tara was the only one there Abel (The Shop Owner) had left for the day, she said that she was going to stay late today and hopefully get everything in the oven.
There's a chance she will have her baby tomorrow, it would be better if she has the baby tomorrow because that would mean Abel would be able to come back to work on Monday.
If she has the baby on Monday Abel will be out the whole week.
Meaning the shop will be closed for a week. This probably isn't the update anyone wanted to hear. Wave 2 is going to be slower than Wave 1 it seems. Please refer to the spreadsheet for updates on the status of Wave 2. I will update in here as always.

$35 + return shipping to get a 60% cerakoted? Count me in. When my Grid600 gets here I need to get that baby sprayed silver.. I'm in Memphis so im sure shipping will be minimal as well.

Definitely a cool service and prices seem almost too good to be true! Might give this a try.

In terms of the Cerakote process, does this process and price include the removal of other finishes like anode, MAO, etc?

Yes, the cost covers the removal of the finish on the board!

After talking to the owner for a bit it seems like a lot of these places charge a lot more because of all the amount of work they have to preform on the guns that come in. They need to open them up, degrease them, then take care of all the little individual parts along with having to use the proper tools to take apart the guns. When it comes to keyboards they are a lot simpler and I already bring them unassembled.

I've been wanting to cerkaote one of my TKLs for a while now...

Edit: holy cow that's a lot of available colors. Choosing one is gonna be a challenge.

Seems like every color except Orange has at least 3 options. 9 different types of silver too

This is awesome. Is there any chance the actual cost might come in under 35? Not that 35 isn't super reasonable, more curious because I'd be interested in only the top half of a 45% which is probably much less surface area than a full 60%. The answer 'same price for my trouble' is also perfectly reasonable :)

Damn that X60 looks good.  Almost exactly what I was thinking of doing to mine.
Your price is definitely better than what the shop by me quoted,
but then again I'm in south FL where everything is overpriced  :))

$35 is super cheap anyway. Any cheaper and I imagine the shop is either giving away the materials or some portion of the time/labor.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I had a package stolen from me on Tuesday from my current address. Unfortunately that package was GMK Monochome, so I'm hurt that one of my favorite sets was stolen from me but at least I can learn not to have packages shipped to my address anymore. With that being said All keyboards sent for cerakoting will be sent to my parent house which has a Nest Doorbell so I will see all the deliveries. My mom is also retired and is home all the time so your keyboard will be in good hands! Luckily they only live 20 mins away from me so I can stop by on my way to the cerakote shop to pick up the boards.

I had a question about your first board you had done, which I also ran across on the cerakote website :)

Did your dude mask anything on the board before proceeding?  That's all.  Thanks

Ayy the guy was able to post a pic of it to the site! Awesome! As for masking he didn't need to he coated all the surface area of both halves. So both the inside and the outside are Benelli Sand. He even cerakoted my screws for the X60!

Filled out a form for Cobalt, though I was really thinking Sniper Grey would do the trick. Is the blue weight or base of your Pearl also Sniper Grey? That's the main thing that stopped me. My SO is looking for a dark grey, but not too dark, and certainly not blue or bluish. She really likes Charcoal.

e: After doing a bit of white balancing in Lightroom, it looks like Sniper Grey is lighter in color than what she wants, and close to the render that is posted on cerakote.com. "What you see is what you get" looks pretty true in this case. Their examples and galleries all just have terrible lighting it seems. We'll stick with Cobalt, assuming the 40-person cap hasn't been met. (:

Spoke with the Shop Owner (Abel) and he let me know that MAO can be sandblasted off just like normal anodization.

The first 5 board owners have been contacted. I will take all 5 boards with me to the shop in one trip to conserve on gas and time once they all arrive. Expect an update with pictures once all the boards are done!

Yeah, this service is really awesome! My SO was disappointed in how light of a gray, almost silver, her KBD75 case was when it arrived; and they don't sell dark gray cases. Now we have a chance to fix it.  :thumb:

I have a question regarding this -- is every "wave" of boards a lead time of 2-3 weeks?

So 2nd wave will happen 2-3 weeks from now?

I'd like to have a board cerakoted but it seems I'm late, and I'd have to wait months if I submitted an entry now.

I'm trying to run this service as best as possible, but since it is the first time I am running it I am trying to see how well I manage with 5 boards at a time, if the shop owner can manage 5 boards I will talk to him about bringing more boards in batches, I would hate to have an incorrect color be put on a board because there are too many boards and the owner was getting confused. Please be patient, the cerakote process alone takes about a week to a week and a half, my estimation of time is 2-3 weeks because I am factoring in time for the owners to ship to me, time at the cerakote shop, and time for me to ship back to the owners.

I just added a public spreadsheet with people's positions, boards, and colors. People who have filled out the form can look over what board and colors they selected for the top and bottom colors. Here's the spreadsheet

Oh dang I'm #12! Wave 3 ftw. Only thing that needs to be different is the change from Cobalt to Magpul Stealth Grey H-188Q.

Only the top and bottom are cerakoted? Is it possible to cerakote other parts of the keyboard?

Of course! It's going to cost more and we can talk about it when I send you a private message when it is time for your wave.
