Keycap profile clerification
« on: Wed, 30 January 2019, 09:23:40 »
Hi.

Im kind of new on this keyboard comunity and have reed a lot about diffrent keycap profiles. One thing that I can't get the hang of is the OEM profile. Please correct me if I'm wrong but is OEM the most common keycap profile of all and that it's the one that both Razer and Corsair uses. One other thing that I'm wondering is if filco is just an other word for OEM. If not then what is it.

Please help. Thanks!

See if this helps clarify your question about profiles

https://deskthority.net/wiki/Keyboard_profile

Many times people say OEM profile to mean a generic profile that isn't aftermarket or specialized.

And Filco is a brand/company, a part of diatec.

The problem with corsair (k95 and more) and razor (blackwidow and more) is that they don't have a standard bottom row size, see link: http://www.maxkeyboard.com/mechanical-keycap-layout-and-size-chart.html

So, let's say  in a Ducky keycaps set Ctrl, Win, FN/Menu and the Spacebar won't fit on a corsair k95 keyboard botten row.

Ducky, Das (in the link) have a standard bottom row size. Ctrl, Win Alt and FN/Menu = 1x1.25 and the Spaceber = 1x6.25.

Most of the Cherry MX keycaps sets won't fit on corsair k70 and more and razor blackwidow + more. You have to read the text when buyin keycaps sets.

This set (not a good one) will fit on corsair and razor but you have select the right size before ordering: http://www.maxkeyboard.com/ansi-layout-custom-backlight-cherry-mx-keycap-set-top-print.html

My Ducky One RGB YOTG with Jukebox SA keycaps.

Standard bottom row size.

I've always thought XDA is the best profile to type on comfortably. SA is my personal favorite.

There are so many profiles now... can be hard to track. MDA (a.k.a. MIX) is new and cool, and MT3 looks really great. Would love to get my hand on some MDA blanks and any MT3 set...

OEM is original equipment manufacturer. Basically it means the manufacturer has a proprietary keycap profile. Each OEM profile is a non-standard profile created by the manufacturer and not based on any existing keycap. This isn't to say that it isn't similar to a profile.

Although in practice most OEM sets are similar profile to Cherry but slightly taller keycaps.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
