Sorbothane for FC660C
« on: Sat, 09 March 2019, 10:38:16 »
Hi guys, I'm finally taking the plunge to purchase my first mechanical keyboard, or specifically the Leopold FC660C. Would shelf liner or a denser material like Sorbothane be better for silencing the reverberation of the keyboard?

What is an appropriate thickness of liner to use?

Honestly, installing silencing rings & lubing the stabilizers will make a 660C much quieter than installing a sheet of sorbathane under the PCB. Sorbathane surely will help it be a little quieter still, but I would highly recommend doing those two mods if silent operation is what you're after. As far as what thickness & hardness sorbathane to use I've had good results on a few of my boards with MX & ALPS switches using .1" thick, 30 duro sheets.

Ahh I see. I was actually thinking of using the KBDFan's Silence-X rings to silence the board. I have 205g0 on hand, but I'm not sure if I should use thick lube on topre boards as people have said that it could make the upstroke "sticky".. What are your views on the optimal lube to use?

I used Krytox VPF1514 on the sliders & Tribosys3204 for the stabilizers on my 660C. I think 205g0 could work for both, but you'd have to be very careful to just put a super thin layer on the sliders. I went for VPF1514 on my sliders cause they were super smooth before lubing & I didn't want to mess with that by using a grease. I've heard of people getting good results using Tribosys3204/3203 on the sliders as well.

For my FC660C I've placed a few pieces Sorbothane in the bottom part of the case, mixed with some silverstone silencing foam also. They sorbo should be working well to dampen some of the vibrations running through the plastic of the case, and the foam should will be deadening any reverberations happening within the airspace under the PCB. I've also placed some sorbothane in between the plate and the PCB, stuck to the plate wherever there was enough space, in particular under the spacebar section. That seems to really prevent much of any plate ping.

I used 3204 for the sliders and the stabilisers. you only need a very light application though. All the sliders have Silence X Rings which does a bit to reduce the rattly sound of the board, there are probably more effective silencing rings, such as the Keyclack V2 rings, but they are thicker and will start to affect feel and tactility. The Silence X Rings are so thin that they don't seem to affect the feel very much, but do have a quite noticeable effect on the sound. They can be a little bit fiddly to get installed and to fit properly, but overall I would recommend them.

Definitely want to give properly silenced Topre a try sometime though..

The sheet of sorbo I got was 0.125 inches thick, and has worked well for keyboards as well as for silencing computer hard drives.

Foam should be sufficient, I doubt there's enough chassis vibration on the plastic case to warrant sorbothane.
